How to finish Visions of the Past?

I joined a Public Forging Steel instance and got to the end. We beat the big construct and then I went to the portal, which asked me if I wanted to wake up. So I did. And that was it. There was no 'Story Complete' or anything like that. I still have Forging Steel in the top right of the screen as unfinished. How do I complete this story?

Did you wait for the NPCs to finish their dialogue(s)? Try that, and/or speaking to them before approaching the portal.

There is an option to continue the story, scrying pool maybe? I can't recall, but I did it in two separate runs.

It's very easy to leave the instance before the NPCs are done talking. If you wait till you get your reward you progress. If you leave early you have to do it again.

I didn't leave early the first time but only because I was managing inventory. My daughter and friend both did. So we did it again. At least it helps progress achievements.

You need to open the chests at the end and wait for the dialogue to finish, which is when the NPCs stop moving and become available for new dialogue (see icon over their heads). Only then you have finished the mission and can move on to the next.

A good rule for any story instance is you need to please wait until you see the crossed swords and loot-box come up, and your green story text on the right side of your screen will update. Instance owner should wait for everyone else to leave, and be the last one to exit the instance.(all portraits will be blank)I'm sorry you lost your progress. ANet should put in a check that asks you if you want to abandon your progress if you attempt to leave an instance too early.
