How to trigger burst of shadows?

Been trying to trigger deadeye skill burst of shadows but i cant. How does one trigger it?

You mark a target and if that target is defeated while it's still marked, Burst of Shadows triggers at the mark's location.

It's a very... weird trait. The only place it has any use is if your target is surrounded by other targets in close proximity.

I use it on my glass DE build for an AoE melee range blind on a successful stealth stomp, it often stops just enough cleave to let you portal out. That said, that is a really specific use, and I mostly use it because the other two traits are not at all useful in this particular build.
