Good mesmer open world build?

For most open world content, strongly recommend power builds in general. The burst damage very helpful against enemies with relatively small health pools. I personally find power builds more fun to play as well.

I admittedly haven't tried mirage in open world since the last patch, but gs + sword/focus chrono has been my preference for a long time. Was much faster at killing trash pre-patch. Focus 4 for pulling trash together, sword and greatsword because they have good cleave. Greatsword is also nice for being ranged.

Signet heal because it refreshes your phantasm skills.
Utilities: well of calamity, mantra of pain, phantasmal disenchanter
Traits: Domination top-mid-top, Dueling top-bottom-top, Chronomancer mid-mid-bottom.

I play in full zerk but you can use marauder's if you'd like a bit more health. There's also some more defensive trait and utility choices out there...but honestly, in open world it's faster and more fun if you just kill stuff before it can kill you. That said, since you're new you can also try swapping Dueling for Inspiration bottom-mid-bottom. That adds condi clear and heal on shatter, and 1s distortion (invulnerability) when using your heal.

Usage guide:

When ranged, greatsword 2-4 and your utilities are all good for damage. Melee, focus 4 to pull trash together when needed/available, smack trash with sword 2 and sword auto. Use shatters whenever you have 3 clones up, F1 shatter does the most damage, use that if available. Gravity well (elite) also pulls enemies together and has good CC/damage.

I generally like to start with GS4 when approching trash, then GS 2+3, use my utilities, GS2 again, then GS4 again when it's up, if anything is still alive then weapon swap, focus 4 pull if available, use focus 5, sword 2, then fill with auto and sword 2 off cooldown until I can swap back to GS. Rinse and repeat as necessary.

Haven't play mirage much after the latest patch, I notice protection is gone (from chaos trait line?). Not sure how much is affected.

You only notice it if you fail a dodge and get hit. Otherwise... No real impact, it's still very tanky and if like me you use Tourment rune, well, plenty of heal if needed so..

With the boosted dmg and all those buff, I think I'll soon replace TB by Viper tbh, I don't think I need to be full defense now even for harder solo content.
