The impact of Path of Fire on GW2's playerbase

Recommended Posts

Those are subscribers for the GW2 Reddit and are not indicative of the actual player base. This is evident as the population has increased since the game launched according to the link which doesn’t happen for pretty much any MMO. The “active player” column is simply a flat 2.85% of the Reddit subscriber count.

MMO-Population is next to useless.  You might as well ask a Magic 8 Ball.  You'll get better results.

I mean, come on.  These people say Wildstar still has a population!

I was coming to say the same thing. I can't find it on there now but that site used to explicitly say player and subscriber numbers are estimated based on aggregate reviews and how frequently each game appears to be talked about in forums, reddit and other places.

Among other problems they list total and daily players for Ashes of Creation, New World and Wildstar. The first two haven't been released and are only occasionally running alpha or beta tests so they cannot have daily players and haven't released any data on total sales so far, and Wildstar shut down in 2018. (Oh, and City of Heroes, which shut down in 2012, that's ranked as the 32nd most played, just ahead of Blade & Soul.)

They also show the number of subscribers as the same as the total number of players, even for games with an optional subscription like Elder Scrolls Online and ones which don't have a subscription at all like GW2.

It's nice that they think GW2 is doing well, but it's at best an educated guess and more likely totally inaccurate. It's getting a few more search engine hits and the automated tracking software that site is a glorified advert for has picked up on that, but it doesn't mean anything more than that.

It's at the bottom of the page:

"We have only been collecting player information on MMO Populations since 2015. The above data represents our knowledge about estimated player counts, subscribers and popularity for /r/GuildWars2: CMCs Wild Ride (aka Guildwars2) "

They're basing everything off the Reddit page which is pretty much useless.

That's an unofficial (so called "private") server. And it is now called Homecoming (with CoH only as a subtitle), because NCSoft "asked nicely" (as is their right, seeing as the CoH title still belongs to them). The real CoH is still dead though, and will remain so.
