I wonder how a "/say only" event would effect WvW

With the importance both /team and /map have in the speed effectiveness of defenses and rallies, I wonder how an event that only allowed /say would effect WvW.

I'm not necessarily suggesting this should be an event so much as I'm putting forth a thought experiment. It would be interesting if people started breaking off in to smaller groups and more actively scouting, and seeing how people would carry messages across a map. Maybe there would be "messengers" that see an attack happening and carry that info on to the Commander on the map, or maybe people would take it upon themselves to defend with who they have present.

Mind you, if any other form of chat is allowed, it might ruin the effectiveness of the event, but it would also severely limit communication in other forms that might make WvW less fun. So it'd definitely be a difficult thing to make work without impacting social circles and what not, but events are only temporary anyway so I couldn't see it being the end of the world.

It wouldn't be good.

I ignore team chat, and already think it's a bother to give info in map chat. Chat's mostly crap 90% of the time and arguably is a distraction.

Over in these parts, people link to stuff after it's lost to complain about it. m

Ye...

Ever since I started playing these sorts of zonal games, "mumble" years ago, I always wondered how the message would get to it's destination if not for the instant communication - it sort of spoils the whole semi-medieval tech vibe.

... when voice comms appeared, I knew that notion was dead. It seems there's no way to get interesting communications minigames to work now without them being circumvented by voice.

I'd be forced into Discord.

I generally hate being there as tracking stealth classes requires me to hear their skills going off in the distance.  Even without that, the constant stream of sound directed at me drives me up a wall.

So I'd probably just continue to not play...

Chat's a big part of the draw for me.

But then again I like the kind of neighbors that blow things up and wipe out on their lawnmowers at 3am.
