New player leveling - what should I do with all the random loot I get?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I am a new player in the middle of leveling (around lvl 30 rn) and I am trying to figure out what to do with all the random loot you collect throughout. Should I dismantle what I can for crafting resources? Should I sell it all on the market? I am out of inventory space because I am a bit of a hoarder and I don't know what to do.

If there are any good comprehensive guides on all the things I should be doing while leveling that would be great too! Thanks!

A good rule of thumb is to salvage blues an greens for resources with a basic salvage kit, salvage yellows below 20 silver (or whatever the current Glob of Ectoplasm price is) for a chance at Ecto  with master salvage kit (the yellow one), though, you don't need to worry about that yet, you only get ectos from lvl 70+ gear - so at your level, just sell yellows.

Never sell them to vendors unless the Trading post price is below the vendor price. But at that point it's better to just salvage.

Everyting else is either junk or salvageable material. You can right click on any salvage kit and select "salvage fine and lower" (blue and below) or "salvage masterwork and lower" (green and below) and it will salvage all the stuff in that range - including salvageable materials. Stuff like "worn garment" or whatever. If you hover over those items it'll have "salvage material" written on it. You can only salvage it. You can sell it on TP too, but i have yet to find a good price for it over salvaging. Besides, i need the materials so... 😛

Every vendor has a "sell junk" button on the bottom right. It's always 100% safe to click that, junk items are just vendor trash that give you some small amount of money. You can't do anything esle with them. So no point in hoarding them.

Always identify unidentified items and only then salvage because all rarity tiers have a chance to drop you a higher rarity tier.

Story items you can't do anything with except use, so if you don't have a use for it - destory them. Some you can sell so check vendors, but most are just for wearing. You can't salvage any of the story gear rewards i think.

And lastly, just open up TP, see what prices look like. If it's way above the vendor price, consider selling on TP. But if it's like 1 silver or 2, it's mostly ok to salvage.

Generally, the best thing to do at your level is salvage gear and sell it.  Low-Mid level salvaged materials are usually more valuable than top level materials.  Alternately, salvage gear and use it to level crafting skills you are interested in.  Or salvage and hoard the materials for later.

Junk items (which are actually labelled Junk Items) can be sold without fear.  They are literally Junk!  Story items and collection items that don't have a sell price in the description can usually be destroyed without fear.  If in doubt. check the GW2 Wiki.  It's a very good source of info.

Unidentified items should be identified before salvaging or selling.  This is because they have a chance to be identified as a higher rarity than the base unidentified item, and ID'd items yield better salvage.

There isn't really any point in hoarding lower-level gear.  The market is saturated with it, so selling it without salvaging first will usually get you less money.

At higher levels, some gear becomes more valuable than its salvaged components.  Yellow gear that sells for 20+ silver can be worth more if sold whole, and all Orange gear is usually worth more sold whole than salvaged.  Green/Blue/White gear is almost always better to salvage.

Some gear awarded from the story or from leveling rewards can't be sold or salvaged.  Most of them can still be used in the Mystic Forge to produce a random piece of gear that can be sold/salvaged.

And to add to the already useful advice given, you want to salvage gear because that will give you luck which you consume to increase your magic find. This will increase the value and amount of loot you find as you keep adventuring. There's no real use for you to have any money right now as you're levelling. At low levels, your magic find increases quickly and makes a significant difference in how much treasure you pick up.

Also, if you don't know about something in order to not manually search the wiki for it use the /wiki chat command.

Just open your inventory, press enter to enter chat and type:

/wiki (space) [shift click on an item you're interested in]

It should look something like this:

/wiki [Salvageable Pelt]

That will bring you to the wiki page of the item and you can see what it can be used in and everything connected to it.

Before 'salvaging everything' certain items rewarded to new characters must be equipped before salvaging to qualify for a particular achievement.

Here's the information:

Welcome to Tyria, and good luck.

My approach to dealing with loot on low level characters is this:

1) Push the deposit materials button (to free up space).

2) Open any bags/boxes OR group them together to open later if I don't have room.

3) Check for anything this character can use right now or in the very near future - the bits in bold are important. I don't pass low level equipment between characters because it's not worth it, they get more than enough of their own drops and I don't keep things just in case they'll be useful one day. If that happens I can get another or I'll have levelled up too much to use it anyway. (If I get a level 7 drop on a level 5 character I might keep it, but at level 7 I either use it or discard it.)

4) Move anything which isn't weapons, armour or trinkets (aka equipment) to the bottom of my inventory to sort out later.

5) Open the Trading Post and sell any equipment I don't need which can be sold.

6) Use a salvage kit to salvage any remaining equipment and then deposit materials again.

7) Some equipment can't be sold or salvaged, I'll hold onto these to sell to an NPC merchant when I see them or to put in the Mystic Forge in Lion's Arch to turn into something useful/tradable. If I find it's one of the items I can't sell, salvage or forge (usually story rewards) I'll delete it.

8 ) Once I've got space I'll repeat the process with all the bags and boxes I couldn't open before.

9) When I'm in town and/or have time I'll go through any non-equipment drops and work out what they are or what to do with them, using the Wiki to look up anything I'm not familiar with.

My system for level 80 characters is almost identical, with three exceptions:

1) I don't need to check if there's anything they can use because I'll have given them all a set of exotic equipment with matching stats so any drops won't be an improvement except in the (for me very rare) case it's ascended and then I want to decide which character it's best for.

2) I might sometimes get items which are worth saving for another character, it has to be exotic (because exotic tier equipment is easy to get so it's not worth saving anything below that) and has to either have stats I know I will need for a character who is close to level 80 or let me select stats.

3) Rare equipment is always salvaged rather than sold because the materials are valuable and more useful to me (mainly the ectoplasm), and with exotics I don't want I'll check the price and only sell if it's worth a lot, otherwise I salvage it for the same reason as rares.
