Its time for tails!

Recommended Posts

Its what we've all been waiting for. Well, those of us who aren't Charr already!

Its no secret that one of the reasons we lose players to other games is because despite this being a cosmetic-based end-game,  the cosmetics in this game are actually rather lackluster compared to other games, and there's alot of things which contribute to that but a few of the main ones are: 1) Unable to hide certain armor piece (main request is chest armor for male Norns, etc.), 2) Unable to equip any kind of ears/horns/etc. with outfits, or with each other (e.g glasses+horns should work), and 3) Overabundance of gliders that aren't available as backpieces, and backpieces that can't be dyed, sometimes even when the gliders can be!

(Weapons that can't be dyed is another one, but there's usually enough variation to make it not such a big problem.)

But I think adding tail attachments for non-Charr races would also go a long ways to improving the cosmetic choices, especially in roleplay settings. It'd also likely improve sales of other related items e.g cat ears+tail bundles. I know it seems unnecessary to many but its just one small improvement that could have a big impact, I think.

No furries please.  Which game has better cosmetic options then GW2? Also when it comes to dying and such?  Black Desert Online maybe?

This is an odd reply considering this game has one of the most literal furry races in existence. And I'm not sure we're allowed to directly talk about other games by name here.

This is the first I've heard of people quitting GW2 because other games have better cosmetics. Admittedly my other MMO is Elder Scrolls Online which is a bit more focused on keeping a consistent aesthetic, but even when people talk about other MMOs I don't hear better cosmetic options mentioned as a factor in leaving GW2 or choosing another game over it.

I do like the idea of having tails available for other races, but I'd want it for one specific purpose, which requires using a tail and a backpack together so for me it would need to be either chest or leg armour with a tail attached rather than a tail backpack.

I'd be fine with it being like the cat and bunny ears where there's an obvious head band making it a costume piece like real-life Halloween costumes rather than something that's supposed to be part of your character.

I want to recreate my old free-form role-playing character: https://i.imgur.com/ZmhksDi.jpg

I've gotten close: https://i.imgur.com/NuJqOIL.jpg I've got the clothing, the cat ears, the bat wings, the sword, even the gold dragon mount (I need to update the screenshot, she's using a different skin now) and even the little blue 'fire lizard' (skyscale hatchling mini). The only thing missing is the tail. (I could even take a screenshot somewhere in Ascalon with lots of armadillos and pretend they're her army...yes she had an army of armadillos, it's a long story.)

I think it's seriously impressive that I've been able to get that close in a video game. When I created that character I'd joke that she was such an absurd mess that she'd be impossible to make in anything except free-form RP. The closest I've gotten previously was in City of Heroes (which had a very versatile character creator) where I could do the wings and the tail but not the dragon mount or pet.

It would be pretty cool to be able to finish the look, but as I said I need to be able to have the wings and the tail together or it doesn't work for me.

I have seen some amazing looks in this game, the possibilities seem endless. From a guy that looks exactly like Ken (the barbie) in a disco outfit, to the Hulk, to some completely kitten mofo, to ridiculously eye-blinding ball of fire up to extremely elegant and Royal looks.  I have a thing for Eye patches and was able to buy the Magnus Eye patch. (No I am  not a Pirate). 🙂

NB I will remove the furry comment, I do not think I will  have to be afraid of this game turning into everyone wanting to look like an animal.

I think it's covered by the rules on off-topic conversations. You can mention other games, but it has to be in the context of discussing GW2.

The other thing to consider, which definitely isn't a forum rule, is that everyone else may not have played the same games you have so you still need to explain it. If I said "I think we should have crafting customisation options like Elder Scrolls Online's motifs" that would be useless for anyone who hasn't played ESO so I'd still need to explain what's good about it and what I think GW2 could take from it. (Except I don't actually think they should do that.)

Echoing the sentiment that I'd prefer, if they get added at all, for them to be obvious costume pieces as opposed to anatomy. Not only do I think that fits better in Tyria (lore reasons), I also think the armor team suffers enough trying to figure out moving Charr tails (tip: they haven't completely figured it out yet).

To be clear, tails aren't really something I'm interested in. The only time I'd use them (or the ears) would be to give a character a holiday costume or make a gag character for cosplay purposes - but that's no reason to shut down the idea for those who'd want it. Around the same time the Shrine Guardian outfit was released, quite a few people requested that the ears be tossed into the store separately, and that's exactly what ArenaNet did. People had the same objections and reservations about those that you'll see regarding tails, but I imagine they turn coin for the company enough to justify their addition.

Being that they've already given us a Tenguwu and a giant shuriken to wear on our backs, tails are probably already in the works for EoD.

Brace yourselves.

Someone said they don't want to see norn with tails. Ummm... a bit late? But let's go with that.

We've already got, IN GAME FROM LAUNCH, some norn that get stuck in their animal forms. Would it really be that odd to see one that doesn't quite make it all the way back, and still has the snow leopard or wolf tail?

As for the other races? Well, tails can possibly help with balance, right? Would it really surprise you to see an asura testing a golem-style tail to improve their ability to roll and dodge?

Sylvari? They can shape and manipulate plants, which is also what their very flesh is. And many of them crave new and novel experiences. Resculpting their bodies to try new things would be entirely reasonable to expect from at least some of them. Particularly the ones that take off to do new and exciting things all across the world.

Charr? A costume tail to go over their normal tail, no big deal at all considering some outfits/armors already do something like that. And if a charr lost their tail on the battlefield, you can bet they'd consider getting a replacement if someone offered them one, just so they could have their old balance back.

And humans? *gestures at the real world* Yeah, some of them will go for that, and that's not even taking into account the level of crazy that's required to strap on some armor, grab a sword, and trust that a little fireworks launching backpack thing can keep you from going 'splat' as you jump off of a cliff to get the drop on a swarm of undead. For the average PC, it's totally within the realm of "unusual but not surprising".

With ALL OF THAT SAID... If the long hoped for Tengu are on the way ... then there's the problem that would stop this. Their tails are very different from the kind being discussed here, and I can't see any of them taking a wolf/cat tail, even to replace a missing tail. They'd get a bird tail replacement, because that's what they're built for.

So... yeah. Easy enough to explain for what we have. Very hard to explain if they want to add tengu into the mix at some point.

I don't know man... players already look like they escaped the freak show... if anything I'd like some kind of visual noise reduction before we keep polluting the screen with more visual things. Not everyone has a great taste or concept for their character and it does impact on how the game looks. I remember Guild Wards when it wasn't "Mu Legends" or something like that and I kind of miss it.

Did I miss the proposal on how a tail would actually be added? As a backpack? And how it would interact with armor and outfits? Just clip right through, I suppose?

If you dont wear anything it cant clip through it.

Big brain thoughts.
