Why I think engineers should become pirates.

  1. Engineers match the pirate theme more than any other class.
    • • Gun powder themes are heavy among pirates.
    • • Pirates aren't really too stealthy, as they are usually in a ship that fires cannonballs. The stealthiest thing they can do most of the time is disguise the flag on their ship. Theft doesn't usually occur through pickpocketing, as all they need to do is loudly threaten you with death to get what they want.
    • • Thieves are pretty much ninjas in GW2. Ninjas are the natural enemies of pirates.
  2. Corsairs and Aetherblades now utilize magitech.
  3. Pirates are known to use daggers, which probably makes pirates one of the few avenues that engineers have to obtaining the weapon type for their profession.
  4. Water themes are becoming heavier! Skiffs, fishing, turtle mounts, water dragon, etc. Pirates themes do well around water!

Pirating assumes there is profit to be made in plundering.

Clearly, there is far more profit to be made in PvE farming. Because there is nothing to plunder. So becoming a pirate in GW2 is the eqvivalent of becoming a hippie.

You're saying engineers should become hippies.

Pirate isn't exactly a profession, it's more of a lifestyle and is simply done through fashion. Besides, Engineers already have everything fit for a pirate, get yourself a HMS Divinity for extra sailor points.

Scrappers faced a similar issue of being more of a lifestyle. What is a scrapper? A person that collects scrap metal! You don't even need to dress up to roleplay that! So how did they fit the theme in? The gyros could've have been given to any engineer specialization. The only thing that really makes the scrapper theme work is the sledge hammer, which shares a lot of the same function as the Tool Kit bundle.

While pirates do face a similar issue, they provide more to the table than just a weapon. Daggers, heavy artillery, and dirty tricks. They can take the newest tech themes in the game and get slimey with it.

You know, I never thought about it, but Lion's Arch is a hippy ex-pirate city. The players are the real pirates! PvE farming is looting and pillaging, so that is sort've what piracy should be. I wanted to be a real pirate, but it turns out I was a real pirate all along.

Scrappers are names given to the survivors of the fleet crash in the jungle, and much like you said, not all engineers are scrappers but all scrappers are engineers. A pirate can be made from any class, the Aetherblade roster is varied and made of engineers, warriors, thieves, elementalists, hell Mai Trin is likely a Thief. If a spec was perhaps restricted in compatibility to two classes, like Daredevil getting Physical skills like Warriors it wouldn't be much of a problem, but anyone can be a pirate.

A lot of the physical profession specializations are more like a theme than a title. Collecting and using scrap metal was something everyone in Verdant Brink was taking part in. Engineers just suit the theme the best, so them having it just feels natural.

They could go into a very specific kind of theme, like cannoneer. I don't expect anyone to be called an actual pirate for a specialization. I just think that the theme matches the engineer exceptionally well with the direction that the game has taken nearly all of the pirate factions.

Scrapper actually has a bit more background than that. It was a term originally given to charr warbands who were essentially assigned the role of scavenger, picking over battlefields and the like for useful materials and finding a way to recycle them into the war effort, usually as a punishment detail. The aftermath of the fall of the Pact fleet became a case of the scrappers that were attached to the fleet going "okay, we're in a jungle surrounded by high-tech scrap, let's show everyone what we can do!"

Which proved to be successful enough that it was adopted by engineers of other races.
