Rant about GW2:EOD announcement

Recommended Posts

After researching these last days I came to the conclusion that my first impressions were rash and I would like to apologize to ArenaNet.

Note: I still stand for better communication because some of these issues could be avoided if they had proper clarification and I still hope someday we will get housing. 🙂

Spoiler

***Before anything, just as a kindly warning: this is a rant to ArenaNet from a fanboy who loves the game, if you are not into this type of conversation I kindly ask you to ignore it.***

So... I gotta say, I was expecting something different for the story missons... back during Icebrood Saga, you introduced DRMs and I thought you would apply it into the expansion as it was a great way to handle repeatable content for story missions, and although I do like strike missions, they require 10 players and are only unlocked after you've done the story mission, sometimes even leading you to dislodged places outside the story.
I think DRM-style story mission has better benefits as five players content is much easier to engage, and completing your story missions would give you experience for the fight as well as unlock meaningful loot drop as rewards, and just as DRMs, these story missions could have CMs and would happen in the same story instance giving meaning to spend resources on things such as world-building and VA for those instances.
I see strike missions as weird raids, you engage them for a single boss only, and as I previously said, sometimes they are even outside the story in dislodged places. I believe these situations could also be solved with story mode raids aka raids with difficulty options and they would also appeal to players that like challenging content, aka normal raid difficulty, and even the hardcore players, aka CMs raid difficulty.
What I had envisioned for the story missions was: talking-only moments would be single-player story missions then when dealing with mobs and some mildly powerful enemies they would be DRM-style story missions, and finally, when dealing with powerful bosses and climatic fights they would be raids with difficulty options (Story mode/Normal Mode/CM).
Imagine the amount of replayable content recycled for majority of the player base! (Some people still prefer single-player content in an MMORPG)

On a different topic of the announcement: the Virtuoso. I won't lie, I loved it but I feel baited, the first spec to show and hype had to be an ambiguous silhouette, we don't even hold daggers that way, it led to immense disappointment for I was hoping they would get spears as weapons. I was sure, I didn't think you would promote an image so ambiguous to something that a lot of players wanted and cared about. Then again, it reminds me of the minstrel joke.

Another one: the legendaries. I understand it, FFXIV has something similar and players love it but again baited! When I think legendary in GW2 I think each weapon having amazing UNIQUE skins.

Another one: Fractals. No mention, not a sing hint. 😞

The last one, this is more of a preference: fishing and boat. Why not housing? I feel like the boat thing will be just another mount and glider thing, a way to put skins on the gem store because since those others were introduced, we only got a single skin outside the gem store. Also, I could see myself building my own house with in-game props and going out earning them using in-game methods, just like guild halls, but I can't see myself fishing unless if it's for the sake of completionism.

I really hope you can prove me wrong on all these subjects, for I believe in the amazing team of devs and for the sake of the game that I love and care about.
When you come with things like the Virtuoso ambiguous spear-like silhouette and the Aurene-themed legendaries, it's hard to believe what you say, saying that now you have GW2 as your main focus while still building hype through lack of information and clarification will lead me to believe otherwise.

I think that the EoD announcement was anticlimatic. Average at best. If you pay a little attention to the body language of the main speakers you will notice that they were a bit unease, probably because of the presence of the returning devs that left the game in the state we know...

The only 2 things that hype me are the possibility of the other elite specializations being so well designed as the Virtuoso and the Alliances in WvW.

Everything else feels half-baked and pretty similar to a lot of other games. Fishing is something companies introduce into a game when they dont know what better they can add...

The Aurene-themed legendary weapons are so lacklust that I wouldnt buy the skins from the shop if they were sold there.

I sincerely hope EoD brings a new life to GW2...
