How to survive in WvW

I started playing warrior in this mode to discover pvp and I get obliterated by all the classes in the game.

If i run a tank build, all my opponents literally sustain on my damages and i end dying.

If i go berserk, i just got one shot by everything or i get fear/stun/confusion and i can't land a single attack. I don't get how to play the class and i really don't want to play support with a "warrior class"!😕

This is where I'm going to say, "find what works for you." Just because it is on Metabattle doesn't mean it will work well for you. Just because a build worked for Vaan, doesn't mean it will for you.

I will say that the PvP build has very little sustain, and you should only play it once you know warrior very, very well. Otherwise you're going to get burst down hard and fast.

The WvW one is kind of everywhere stat wise. Mixing and matching isn't bad to do in order to hit certain stat breakpoints. It does have some decent sustain to it, though my advice would be to grab a different rune set. Something like Runes of Earth, those have toughness, and a 10% increased incoming heal effectiveness, which will help Mending Might and Vigorous Shouts keep you alive.

I'm running this at the moment: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?PKwAEdflJwSYXMMmJOWTptPA-zVRYdhPMqhSJsIIiCo1EoiQQmB-w

Unless I'm under very heavy focus fire it survives extremely well. Its able to escape a bad situation as well. Crits could be higher. I may mix and match my amulets some. The Dead or Alive trait's 10% increased incoming healing effectiveness stacks with the rune btw.

I only play sPVP, so I can't speak to what works best in WvW.  But I've been having a lot of success with this build in PvP:

The key is to use signet of Fury as soon as you get into combat to fill adrenaline, and then....wait.  Because of Savage Instinct, going into Berserk mode is a stunbreak, so you can use your Berserk defensively after the enemy CC's you. Can be a nasty surprise for them if they think they have you disabled only to find that suddenly your immune to dmg for 2 seconds and you're bursting in their face.  It's pretty satisfying 🙂 Of course, if you have the opportunity to use Berserk offensively, do that too.

That said, I've found the Berserker is a little tough to get the hang of.  You have to understand the flow of your skills really well so you can make the most of your time in Berserk.   And not use Berserk mode recklessly.  You're pretty weak and vulnerable outside of Berserk, so you need to be smart about when to use it.

Honestly, I would probably start with Spellbreaker if you're new to the class.  It is more forgiving, and full counter can add a lot to your survivability.  Ultimately you'll want to be running it with Strength trait line and Berserker amulet, but I found it easier to start with Defense when I was learning the class because it made me last longer.  You might consider something like this

Good luck, and most importantly, have fun!

Thought I hate condition warrior, I recommend it to get your groove in WvW going. Go healing shouts and conditions.

A core version

Berserker Version

The builds are a bit janky since I made them on a whim during sleep deprivation cycles. But they are sustain heavy and your conditions will be able to kill dudes. The berserker version obviously has more damage. These builds should keep you alive while letting you kill. The specialization is interchangeable depending on preference but Defense and Tactics must stay for healing and sustain. You can also just go healing signet for more passive heal but depends on what you like. Exotic armor can sustain enough as well. Its what I use on my condition warrior and he's a beefy boy that doesn't die easy.

Good luck and hope this helps.

Btw, its considered cheese or gimmicky going with this kind of approach but it is what it is. You want to learn and this'll help maybe.

As with all classes, knowing the ins and outs of the class, as well as the environment in wvw is a huge deal and being adept at these two things will drastically increase your success rate in the game mode.

Pick a playstyle you enjoy, and start from there. If you allow me to offer some advice, IMO spellbreakers are friendlier for newer warriors, and you can't go wrong with full marauders as a power build, or trailblazer/dire on a condi build. I don't recommend going hybrid while learning the class.

You'll have to observe what other professions are doing to kill you, before it starts making sense. Usually each profession has 2-3 builds you'll see a lot and their burst and defensive skills are only a few. Reading their skills (ideally on a character of your own, so you can check the animation as well) helps a lot.

On alpine borders (not the desert border and not eternal battlegrounds), you might find players dueling at the area above the south camp (between the bridge and the sentry). It might help to watch duels and to try dueling yourself, to learn how a 1v1 goes against specific classes. In roamer fights with more people, not much changes other than if you are focused you go on the defense.

For learning the profession itself, at least at the start you can try capturing camps alone. Obviously NPCs are not great practice for pvp, but camp NPCs have a good composition of abilities. Enough to be uncomfortable.

In zerg fights (e.g. 50v50 group fights) things are very different, warrior might not be the easiest profession to learn such fights (and zerg groups generally use only a few warriors).
