Ingame trolls

Recommended Posts

I've been out of the game for a long time and started recently. I joined in W2W but failed miserably in a few fights.

I started getting unsolicited advice (which was abusive and derogatory in tone) from a specific player after this. Basically he/she started unnecessarily telling me how bad I was at the game (which I told him I already knew).

Now I'm old enough to shirk off idiots who troll but I kept getting in game chats from the same player and it has becoming annoying.

Aside from blocking this person, is there anything else I can do?

Ya you block like what else would there be. Some have multiple accounts and keep hitting you up on those to so you then block those in that event. If they drop key phrases I guess you can ss and send a ticket about player harassment and get him a 3 day ban or more but blocking solves you dealing with them

You made a mistake in responding to them. Never, ever, give a serious response.  Remember that you are conversing with an irrational and angry person and you are wasting your time. You need to understand it doesn't matter what you type back to them; they're not listening because they are an egotistical kitten. Incidentally, responding with nonsense has the same effect. Just tell them "no hables anglais" and then "no hablo español"

Not that I recommend anyone try though and just report and block.

Thanks for all your advice.

I've reported the player and blocked him/her.

It's sad though that they need to vent their frustrations by abusing. I'd be happy to take advice if it would help improve the way I play.

But I suppose the people who do this aren't really interested in helping others anyways.

So I'm just going to move on...and try to L2P as the person said (had to search what it meant)...

Most of these people don't know how to l2p either. They're just looking for someone to blame. If anything making you doubt yourself will make it worse.

Maybe a small minority is good, but they need to L2P @ life.

tl;dr I wouldn't even take their advice, without double checking it with other people. You may do so here. 😉 What did they tell you to do, minus the toxicity?

Block. Report. Move on. Don't waste your energy.

If a chihuahua is stark-raving mad barking at you from inside a car, what do you do?  Exactly.

Anyone acting like a troll or just being inanely ignorant like that can be treated the same.  Their psychosocial behavior is no different than that tiny little doggie.

Just move on and then you'll forget it even happened.  It's not even interesting enough to tell a friend about.  How would that go?

"A dog barked at me today!"

"Okay.... and?"

"Uh.. nothing.  I just kept walking."

"Okay... cool story bro?"

Huge Edit:

I need to add that this is just about people on video games acting like jerks.  This is not the same as actual threats via internet or other harmful actions involving personal identity.  Those would be serious matters that need to be dealt with legally, and even criminally in some areas.

I always put myself in invisible mode when I go to PvP or WvW. They can still use the /say chat, but they have less time to write long insults in that case. They are limited to something like "gay ranger, like your mother" (happened yesterday in PvP), it usually comes from bad players that cannot bear the idea to have been killed (if you're bad, you're insulted because you're bad, if you kill them, you're insulted because you've been lucky/your class is better. "You killed me because you've been lucky to crit". Yeah, I'm just a thief with 90% of crit, I've been lucky. It's pointless to reply).

In WvW I remember someone with a comm tag that insulted me because he lost in 1vs1 against a guardian. I killed that guardian twice in 5 minutes, but that stubborn guy always came back, so I decided to give him a fair 1vs1 fight against this comm (I only attacked him when he was going to finish the comm). And then the comm said "a thief like you should be able to one shot him, you're bad". He didn't even realize that I didn't fight, on purpose.

Just put yourself invisible and ignore the /say chat. Even if they target you in pvp, just keep the mark, ignore it. It's pointless to reply. It's not a shame to be a bad player. People always forget that on the other side of the screen, there might be a retired man, someone with real handicap, or physical problems. It's part of being young to always assume.

It is hurting and disturbing, especially if you are a kind and reasonable person, but ignore it, you'll meet awesome people that will make you forget about all of those jerks, after all they are the way they are, it's pointless to overthink their cause and reason. As Clementine said to Joel Barish: "Just go! They are not worth it!".

You can always open up a new chat tab with /say and those most common that opponent can use left unchecked ^^

Wbat you say is true, but a lot of the time people are not able to realize these things when put on the spot, especially after a negative experience. This is usually when these trolls prey on; they catch people off guard when they aren't thinking straight and try to make them say foolish things in the heat of the moment.

It's definitely why fighting fire with fire fails. Say you were to return fire with profanity, and then you can get reported too.

Still, you have a point, when you realize that these people are ultimately ineffectual and their only ways of hurting you are mostly in game except for the small minority of sociopaths with too much time on their hands.

Yes the conclusion still comes down to ignoring them. But if one understands those tactics better, then it won't be nearly as much of a problem.

I actually think these incidents are great to share with friends; to me they are trophies lol.  Not only is it something to talk about, but it's a good way of sorting out and ultimately disposing of any unpleasant feelings. It also takes the power out of the aggressor and puts it back into your hands.

And yes we do talk about this silly little dogs, both irl, and in game. 😉

Good point raised here.  So a good suggestion is ignore, block, and tell your friends about "that guy"

remember people, you never want to be that guy.

like you hack social media accounts of someone, online banking via accessing and stealing $$ of that someone, use SSN or Creditcard # to shop a lot or get the SS benefits from that someone or basically do any harm to that someone because that someone hurt your feelings?

Ever heard of 'Swatting'?  There are absolutely people out there that are unhinged enough to do that all that over the smallest of slights.

Or even no slights just because they can.

There's a lot of terrible people out there, and they probably have internet.
