Hitting a ceiling with Thief.

I stopped playing GW2 around HOTS, and I'm having a really difficult time climbing ranks.

I've always mained Thief but now with a busier lifestyle I feel like I don't have the time required to really study the meta and improve.
I feel suffocated, people reading my every move and being hardstuck in gold.

What are some tricks you guys find useful or actions you take to get out of being hardstuck?

Thief was my answer, i basically try to play objective and try be 50%+ of team offense, but if your team can't hold other place while your cap and decap and make it over to +1 any fight your still gonna lose.

 

Gone are the days where you can be Lebron James and carry an entire team damage is just too low even if you 100% completely outplay some one by the time your done and capped some one has come to retake in which case as a thief you need to re stealth and give up the node and fight ranged and hopefully kill them while they stand on the node to recap it, but while your doing that the node stays decapped and if your team is losing thats even more painful as your still playing the objective and doing everything you can.

 

For 2v2 and 3v3s just form your own team and that will be solved.

I play Mesmer,Thief,Guardian,Engineer there is nothing you can do as a player in a 5v5 to improve your circumstances if your in gold 2+ your going to need a competent team as you can make every right play lose zero fights and still lose.

 

I've been on and off this game for 8 year's this meta is truly a meta you live and die by the people around you in a far more worse way then a game like Dota2 or LoL or even a shooter i really dislike this meta once it matured.

Good thing about thief is that it mostly retains its old playstyle.

 

A thief is not there to duel in 1v1s their job is mostly to decap enemy points, +1 on other duels/fights and some times if nothing else to do ( enemy points have been decpped and they are all in a big fight) pick off the weak targets on big fights and throw poisen on the ground for down bodies. 

 

If you keep this and work on improving your rotations you'll reach plat in no time.

You said it already but Thief isn't the best if you don't have the time to practice it, and their role in PvP has dropped significantly since the second expo--most Thief mains are in WvW now for that reason.

 

We've got a new elite spec coming up with the next expo which might help, but we don't know yet.

 

You basically have three options at this point:

1- Practice and play your meta build properly, this builds skill but takes time, effort and has alot of failures. And considering the changes coming very soon (<half a year), its maybe not a good idea anyway.

2- Use a cheese build and tactics to score easy kills and wins (this is what most players do atm). But its risky because a single patch can destroy these builds entirely.

3- Just play another class entirely. Something more suited to your current situation.

 

Its just a bad time for meta, the game's about to be overhauled.

I dislike blaming the teams I'm with, but you may be right about that. It feels like games are won or lost before the game is even opened sometimes just by looking at players and composition.

I'm in gold 2 and I guess it's a bit of an elo hell, I think my old experience translates okay my biggest gripe is that every thief I face absolutely obliterates me, like I'm missing something.

Try Critical Strikes with Marauder amulet, that's what I do after I returned for 3 weeks now. But the issue with matches will remain, depending on team and rotations. Try play some unranked to switch it off and try stuff like mechanics or rotations for you personally.

Down the focus target, interrupt the rez 5 times, go decap or +1, repeat. Given how tanky everyone is now your effectiveness as thief will improve a lot if you know how to time your burst into animations, which skills to steal on, when a fight is worth your time etc.

This might sound mean, but it's the actual truth:

You stopped this game so long ago that even the stuff you think you remember has changed. There is no shortcut to getting good, put in the hours and the effort. If you can't, make peace with the fact that you're "stuck" on that level. Badly wanting to be a high rated player will just ruin the time you spend playing your gold matches.

I myself used to be 150 rating higher back when I played this game for a job. Now I can't, and guess what the drop in my rating did exactly nothing to me. I got no new allergies, nothing hurts, and my ranked matches are mostly fun. Even more so than they used to be in high plat 3.

I don't want it that bad, but Im also not going to deceive myself into thinking Im doing fine. My skill level is at one place and I wish it to be higher, so getting insight into what the meta looks like from other players help me understand it a little better, and hopefully I can use this knowledge to learn the right things instead of queuing in vain.

Ultimately I just want the rewards from ranked play, but it would be cool to be better at the game, just being a competitive person and all.
