Revenant Elite Spec: Oni Samurai

The next spec to be released is a Rev, with the Oni Samurai theme (hence the Oni mask icon).

Rev will get an Off-hand Mace, for a dual Mace set. Oni use two maces:

Why Rev?

- Oni is demigod related theme, demonic focus, basically Rev type.

- Oni mask tends to be used by Samurai, which means it's for heavy class. Guardian elite has been revealed. Warrior already has Mace main-hand and off-hand. The only heavy spec for Samurai is Rev.

- Thematically speaking, none of other class can really use an Oni mask or a Samurai style beside Rev. It just makes sense!

If we do get the Oni Mask icon and A Samurai themed spec I actually think they’ll give us GS for sure.  My money however is on the more obvious “rev icon” still and possibly not GS, but since Guard didn’t get the Oni Mask I do think the only 3 logical choices for that icon remaining are Thief, Rev, and perhaps Warrior. Can’t see any of the others getting it.

The "obvious" Rev icon is a red herring. It's like people think the "obvious" fire 🔥 icon would be Ele. It turns out to be a support spec for Thief (Torch). Look, the Necro new icon is not "obvious" either. This Oni Samurai fits Rev the most compared to any other classes.

I don't see an unrelated game using a similar mask and a historical Wikipedia reference as being much of an indication of what ArenaNet is going to do.

 

Even if we were to assume that icon 6 is a red herring (highly unlikely), an oni-themed rev elite specialisation would probably use Kanaxai as the legend, and that means dual axes.

It may or may not be. We’ll have to wait and see.  The necro Icon was fairly obvious to me and it was my guess. The only reason people thought it might be the gun icon is that it was teased with a gun. However it was also teased with the elixir on the hip so the “elixir icon” became the most obvious choice as well.  
 

The truth is though that Anet could do whatever it wants and so the remaining 6 icons could go wherever. There are good educated guesses to be made, but it’s impossible to say with 100% certainty at this moment what each icon will be, so we shouldn’t approach it as if things are set in stone. Hell, Elementalist could be the Oni Mask and Rev could be the Fire Icon for all we know at this point since we have no other info to go off of besides the base classes for the remaining icons so far

Well, the other reason was that icon 9 looks like an engineer icon, so people thought it might have been that.

 

Such similarities seem to be among the rules that are being broken, though. Harbinger with an Engineer-like icon, and Willbender with a Thief/Assassin-like icon.

 

Which... does mean that it's not impossible that icon 6 will turn out to be some other profession borrowing something from the revenant (or ritualist, although the eye is MUCH closer to a revenant eye than a ritualist eye) rather than the revenant elite specialisation.

With that eye icon I really doubt this is a thing anymore. Also I'm not a big fan of offhand elite weapons, specially while greatsword is an option.

The thing with offhand mace is that it locks us into a condi spec because our mainhand mace is a condi weapon. Same goes for mainhand axe as well, it would lock us into a condi spec since our offhand axe is a condi weapon.

 

I'd rather we got a melee power dps spec with greatsword as our weapon.

Not a good comparison. It's not the same as having a fire or a bottle. The rev icon literally uses the base Rev eye, a specific symbol. It would be very confusing to have one profession's symbol appear on another's elite spec. If it was a more generic looking eye on the elite spec icon, then maybe but it's the exact same eye.

You do realise those masks were worn by assassins as well? An Oni mask does not immediately point to samurai rev especially when the traditional rev icon exists right there next to what looks like dual daggers or GS. My bet is on the mask going to thief.

Rev already has renegade wich is a fusion of Gw1 Wards and spirits from the ritualist.

It's not. It's revenant themed, but the eye symbol is about as far from the ritualist eye symbol as you can get while still being an eye.

Has it been confirmed that the fire icon is a thief e-spec with torch ?

For me the ghost will surely have one of these legends :

- Togo -> Scepter or Greatsword

- Vizu -> Dagger

- Nika -> Dagger

 

 

Personally to choose I would prefer the Legend of Togo.

 

Perhaps also that will have a Tegu as a legend ... 😟

What's the point of Vizu or Nika when we have Shiro? That's a downgrade.

That's right, but you know Anet ...

They are even able to give you a tengu spec with a two handed sword, all inspired by the warrior genres ... (that would be so bad). I hope and I would like the specialization in question to be more directed towards something this time more supernatural, metaphysical.

I find it highly unlikely that we'll get a second human legend when there are still a bunch of other races (and more in Cantha) all waiting their turn. Why not talon silverwing? You know. someone interesting for once.

 

Honestly tho, it's probably going to be a brand new character, like Kalla was.

The most likely would be Togo, he was still a descendant of the Emperor, in addition to being a very important person AND ritualist moreover. (Especially since they put Shing Jea a lot in value ...), it would have this aspect "teacher to student" during the gameplay maybe even, which would be cool.

Imagine a "Togo / Shiro" duo and they react to each other especially in relation to that ? 😄

The echo of Shiro we channel doesn't seem to be Shiro the Envoy, but Shiro when he died the first time, the one that caused the Jade Wind.

That specific echo wouldn't have any memories of Togo.
