  1. Hey guys,

Have got time again to play an mmo and after trying ff14 the msq just isnt working for me (gw2 has spoilt me on voice acting etc) and i am going to start again on gw2 and work through from level 1.

As an older player with numerous health issues i dont have the best reflexes in the world and i am looking for a class /build that has a low skill cap for getting through the main questlines.

I think it used to be power ranger was recommended for the open world  questing but i dont know if things have changed (i own all but the latest expansion).

    Could anyone suggest a class/build? - thanks.

Also - i dont own living world season 2, will that impact the story much for me?

    Thanks again

    Trev

  2. Returning player here, who has pretty much forgotten how to play and is relearning the game.

I am old (lets just say 40+) and unfortunately due to pretty heavy treatment for the c word i am never going to have the best reactions in the world

But i am sociable and happy to help guildmates out and will be active in any new guild home

  3. Thanks both, i will play through the living world content etc, i guess it isnt a race at the end of the day.

As for finding content difficult, it was a long time ago, but i vaguely remember it was tangled depths i found tough and a specific encounter (morderemoth or something like that).

To be honest, although i am much better, chemo and radio have definitely affected reflexes/concentration capacity so i may well play mostly solo and enjoy the stories as i wouldnt want to inflict myself onto an lfg or guild while slow to react etc.

Thanks again! will try not to post too many annoying questions as i go.

  4. Hey all

i played about 5 years ago, loved the personal story and purchased heart of thorns, path of fire and the living world stories.

I enjoyed the content generally, but remember finding some of the heart of thorns content difficult, i stopped playing during a kitten diagnosis, briefly tried to come back during treatment but wasnt well enough to play.

Im better now, and looking to have some fun on the game again, i have started back at level 1 to remind myself how to play and will re-do the personal story.

At this point though i am considering jumping into end of dragons straight after finishing the personal story, but will the story make zero sense to me? should i work back through heart of thorns and all the living world? will i find it difficult to gear? Will i miss too many hero points or whatever? its been so long since i played that i am not sure how 'skippable' content is. I quit the game shortly after starting pof, i have a raptor, skimmer and a jumping mount but didn't get the flying one that i think was obtainable from POF.

    Thanks

  5. I have played a wow a fair bit, gw2 a bit and before that i played the text based precursors to mmo for an awfully long time .

I have just jumped back into gw2 and started again at level 1 to learn the skills as i have forgotten how to play.

So much of the game is fab, i love the live events, some of the storylines etc. And its nice to know that once i have remembered how to play i could jump onto my old char and not have massive gear issues.

However i do think a lot of mmo players are 'goal motivated' in that they do events for the rewards.. for me it is odd that i hit the most effective gear (aside from agony) so quickly. So i can see why people want more gear progession.

However i think people picked gw2 because they dont like the gear treadmill, so while it might be a good idea for new mmo's it would probably be a bad one for gw2.

None taken.  🙂  It's all good.  I guess that Anet is making enough money for their investors with the current model and maybe they have marketing data from wherever that suggests changing to a different model would be less profitable.  /shrug

You may be right and thanks for being civil while disagreeing! 🙂 - why do people feel the need to put anonymous sarcastic emoticons up by the way? I try to be polite when interacting with people and just gave a view- if someone disagrees with me i would much rather they politely say so than use silly emoticons anonymously...

Sorry, I disagree.  Players that remain playing the game have a greater chance of spending money for gem store items which will bring in revenue over the player who has left with no guarantee of their return.  Anet shouldn't make projections based on players that might return at some point in the future.

ANet might also have better metrics on which accounts do continue playing for years at a time and which ones are idle. It may be that there are more active players over the years than you think.   However, that's something that neither of us will know.  😉

No we dont know, i can only speak from personal experience.

When i first started playing and bought all the expansions, it was a genuine shock to discover i needed to fork out another 20 or 30 euros on living world content (lw2 and lw3)... it was a fair amount to pay up front!

I forked it out anyway, played a few months and then got hit with a  c.ancer diagnosis and was too ill to play for a year or so.

Now logging back on - and discovering there is another 35 euros spend required to unlock non-expansion content does put me off, and i am someone who has spent in the past and bought gems for cosmetic items when i played.

So for me at least, i am someone who does spend, providing i am hooked back into the game again.

That is why mmo's do whatever they can (with offers) to get players back. In my opinion any barriers to getting players back are not a good idea.

Personally i think buying the latest expansion should get the full content, that way anet are getting revenue.

Anyway i mean no disrespect disagreeing with anyone here 🙂

No, it is designed for players to continue playing, not leave for a period of time and return.  Anet gains no revenue when players take time away from the game.

But people arent going to continue playing for years at a time without breaks (well many of us do not) life happens-

One of the benefits is horizontal progression is supposed to be that you can be gone for years, then jump back in. It seems if you do that, you have a significant bill.

I respect your opinion, but believe you have a better chance of revenue from a returning player that actually returns, than one put off by frontloaded cost.

  9. When i first started playing, and bought the expansions i thought i had all the content as a result.

It was a surprise to find i had to buy living world content separately. I think i bought LSW2 and LSW3 as

like everyone else i want to do the story in the right order.

When i logged on recently - considering a return to the game (i am not sure about horizontal progression but i like aspects of this game better than wow) - i discovered that i would need to spend another 35 euros to unlock content that is not an expansion..

Everyone is different, but it put me off for sure. The system is not exactly designed to encourage returning players.

  10. I am old, and started with MUDS, as a student. Then i played wow and it was my first mmo and blew me away.

When i first played GW2 it felt very refreshing, i loved the dynamic events and i loved the story personally...i thought that was better than wow by a mile.

Heart of thorns seemed hard at first, and the associated quests quite frustrating, but i got through them.

I have popped on and off occasionally - but never come back long term so why?.

I think for me it is the lack of visible progression, i totally get the idea of horizontal progression and understand why it appeals to people. For me on a personal basis, the lack of a way to improve gear significantly does put me off.

It doesnt mean GW2 approach to progression is wrong, just that it doesnt quite work for me

Also when i logged in after a lot of time off, the result was i would have had to shell out a lot to get the story in the proper order.

If i buy all the expansions, i think i should get the story.

  11. @Gotejjeken.1267 said:Go Soulbeast, glass as you're capable of (i.e. marauder gear is fine, but berserker everything else).

I find LB / Axe / Axe better for open world than GS is, axe is a mob weapon so it just works better in general and find I don't get reflected all that often to suffer being only range. Traitlines you'll want WS/BM/X...I use Skirmishing for the last one due to vicious quarry giving a ton of ferocity when you have honed axes in BM selected (and WS gives super fury uptime).

Can solo plenty of champs this way, especially if you use a pet with prelude lash as you'll have many ways to take a breakbar down. Shouldn't have too many problems with open world either.

As for group play, just going to lay it out now...ranger is not a group profession. Ranger seriously lacks in the sustain department and can share hardly anything (SB stances are half baked); so if you do decide to do WvW or PvP you're going to need to get used to fringe supporting / roaming. Ranger is pretty excellent in havoc though, so if you WvW and run with groups of 5-8 you can provide a lot especially if you lean into immobilize.

EDIT: Realized I came at the group thing with a competitive perspective--for PvE groups / raids I believe condi ranger is acutally pretty helpful with spotter and such...I don't do PvE group content so your mileage will vary.

Thanks, yes i really just want to avoid being the much maligned build really - and actually be useful for pve when i join a guild

Will definitely try out axes thanks

I would say work towards Soulbeast as your Elite and try and few different power builds with it. As well, try out each of the different weapon combo's that suit power builds (and then eventually Condi to save you buying new gear right now). Getting to know the versatility of your profession will serve you well in the long run.

Yup i am doing the HOT story at the moment and not dying much etc, i do find soloing hero points in HOT a bit of a challenge but that is about itWill definitely start putting points into Soulbeast thanks.

  13. Hey all

Newbie player here (played briefly a few years ago) and just hit 80.I mostly run around open using GS/LB and a power build, but after hitting 80 and reading around i seem to have the much maligned build that everyone hates (i only really use lb for barrage and rapid fire opening then switch to GS or for soloing champs from a safe distance, but its still the hated build)

I am working my way through HOT/Living world / POF so should gain extra hero points to respec, what would people advise?

I still want good solo / story capability, but i also want to bring some usefulness to groups and a future guild.

Ideally i would prefer to not have to replace my maruader gear but will do if power is useless

    Thanks

  14. Hey all

I played briefly a year or two ago, but work and life in general got in the way.Roll forward and i now work from home (so no 3 hour commute) due to a cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment. I have started playing again a couple of weeks ago (still learning my way around again)

I am experienced in MMO's but with the battering my body has had i am NOT quick or what people would call skilled anymore, so a hardcore raiding guild would not be happy with me.However i am friendly/sociable and will do what i can to contribute to the guild.

    Cheers.Trev

  15. Hi All

I briefly played GW2 a year or two ago, got to 80, bought the expansions and played a bit (i think i got to Vabbi) before life got in the way and i stopped playing.I didnt do any of the living world stuff and hardly any of it is unlocked.

Roll forward a couple of years and i have more spare time on my hands- and i have started with a fresh character and just hit 80 and about to finish the personal story (most of which i had forgotten)

This time i am of a mind to do the story in the right order, ie with the living world content, but looking at the price of the first purchasable content (LWS2) i am a bit surprised at the price?. It is £17.00 for one season? that is about half the sort of price id expect to pay for a complete season??. mIf i am unlocking all the seasons it will get a bit pricey just before xmas.

How much content are in these living seasons? are they worth it? Is HOT going to make sense if i jump straight in without getting LWS2?

    Thanks

How would you change things, without hurting ANet's bottom line?
    • Charge more for the expansions?
    • Charge veterans for the Living World too?
    • Charge a subscription and include the episode as part of that?

There aren't all that many alternatives and each alienates someone.

I agree its a tough issue to solve, i dont mind subs- but i am fully aware this would alienate tonnes of players and is a non-starter

Ive paid now - and only have LWS4 to buy so will focus on enjoying the game! :) but i totally get frustration from new players.

Just to make sure. You do know LWS4 episode 5 is for free as it is the current episode (and you should have it unlocked) and episode 2 is free as part of a promo (just check the buy option in the story journal, it says 0 gems at the price). Last week episode 1 was free, and I somewhat expect the same for episode 3 and 4 over the next 2 weeks to happen (but please do not haunt me if it doesnt)

I am still on living world 3 right now but ill definitely check that out, thanks!
