As idpersona says, the first 5 rift events you complete on the weekly maps give bonus chests with different essences in. You can check which maps are available each week by looking under h(ero) / achievements / Secrets of the Obscure / Weekly Rift Hunting.

You get extraction chests for doing the 5 rifts on each map and they contain a variety of essences. If you are on a non Soto map and click the Heart of the Obscure it will tell you which maps currently have Rifts on them (Skywatch and Amnytas always have them). Then just port to the map and use it again to activate normal Rift hunting. Each week you can do the achievements for 5 maps. Each of the first 5 you do rewards a Kryptis Rift Extraction. Each one contains two of the following:
Essence of Despair (4–8) [Red]
Essence of Greed (4–8) [Green]
Essence of Triumph (4–8) [Yellow]

Use the Mastery Point tracker in the achievements panel. It will help a lot for knocking out the required points. Several points are just tied to doing events in each area. You can also use XP boosters to speed up the journey quite a bit.

Thought someone said that tier 2 and 3 give another kind of essence ? 5 rifts on each map? how do you know where they are and when they spawn? ive just been running around and tried using the J but never see any?

From the wiki: Completing Kryptis rifts during Rift Hunting. Receive 3-7 for completing the pre-boss event of any tier rift, and 3-7 for completing the boss event of Tier 1 rifts, or 6-14 if you have trained the Rift Mastery.

2. Any experience you earn on the SotO maps counts towards your current mastery target. Exploration, events, kills, whatever. Use boosters when you have them. Look for banners and bonfires that other players drop, especially at meta events.

3. Guilds often recruit via map chat. If you see other players representing a guild you can ask them if its an active guild and if you can be invited. Worth confirming they do the content that interests you; some may be more focussed on WvW or Raids for example.

Fractals are a good way to enjoy some group content. They start at a low level and let you work up at your own pace. Start by checking LFG / Fractals of the Mists / Initiate Scales 1-25 for anyone offering chilled or training runs. Maybe watch a few YouTube videos so you get an idea of the mechanics involved.

Im a bit confused about rifts i think,,,what is pre rift event? i just been kinda running around map looking for them.  ive tried using think J to see where they are spawning, but never see any?

I bought the game years ago, pof and hot, did get my raptor, skimmer and bunny.  i'm pretty much a newbie, so much i dont understand about the game, but im trying to learn. So I saw Soto coming out and could get a skyscale!! So of course i bought it lol.. I never played much so didnt have many mats for all the requirements. But ive worked hard and got most of the achievements done.  I'm on the saddle achievement now and wow its ruff. My problem is getting essence of despair and training mastery on the skyscale things. I need like 300 or so essence of despair...So questions are these.

1. Is doing tier 1 rifts the only way to get essence of despair? i did rift other day and got like3?  its gonna take a long long time to get over 300 needed. 

2. ON the mastery line for skyscale, i need like think 15 mastery points, that might not be too bad i guess but how do i get experience to level the masteries up? I can only use the skyscale on the soto maps. Is there certain events or stuff i should be doing to increase it faster? i have to finish the last 2 masteries . 

3. How to find a guild? i'm in 2 already but they dont seem active at all. I am a casual player, never did factuals or any of that. More of an exployer type i guess..

Any advice is much appreciated!!!
