They might be talking about a condi dodge build. An acro trickery daredevil D/D build would have good synergy through acro covering the weaknesses caused by taking Lotus Training over Dash.

I thought that at first, but the post was

[Acrobatics] works well for Condi builds, especially with Deadly Arts and Trickery.

implying they're omitting Daredevil altogether. Moreover they were specifically discussing S/D and Shortbow as their weapon sets; beyond that between the third dodge, the minor grandmaster, and the strike damage bonuses (let's not forget strike damage is still significant for a condition thief) Daredevil would surely outstrip the mere extra vigor from Acrobatics.

You're better off with deadeye or daredevil, combined with Deadly Arts and Trickery.

The issue is how heavily Acrobatics overlaps with Shadow Arts AND Trickery. You get vigor from Bountiful Theft with a (ha har) bountiful duration. Why'd you waste entire major traits for essentially the same effect, but worse (no boon strip). Aside from that, much that Trickery offers doubles as an offensive/defensive tool - plus Lead Attacks is way better than Swindler's Equilibrium, and a minor.

I assume I don't even have to discuss SA, because boosted stealth > any of the defensive tools on 300-second cooldown + regen, lol.

The swiftness on dodge Shadow mentioned is also already covered by Dash, if we are talking PvP/WvW.

If I remember correctly, wasn't there like a criminal gang in GW1 Factions that were magicians? Or just had a lot of magicians or something? I can distinctly remember a quest or two involving them but the details are too hazy to recall. First thing I thought of when I think of a casting thief in a Canthan setting.

I bet you're thinking of the assassins' guild, the Obsidian Flame.  🙂

It's probably a visibility thing. When playing as thief I need to keep an eye on every part of the map and my surroundings and have a good idea where all enemy players are when not shown on the mini-map because I have the ability to get somewhere in need quick enough to help.

Other builds that just run for the mid-fight don't need to know anything other than who dares approach them. So if they see anything go wrong (like the other team capture a point) they'll see that as a misplay on my part cause I could have done something about it, they couldn't cause [insert arbitrary reasons here]. And since the midfight can often be very chaotic they won't notice obvious misplays from people next to them.

+1 support also requires working out another player's intention and supporting that, being the 1 that gets plused requires only making your intentions obvious, not trying to sync up with the support.

You'll see similar complaints on the brain dead midfighter from anyone playing primary healer, cause the midfighter will just wander off and out of the support's field of influence.

It's this.  Thief match duties and expectations are very different from those of most other team members.  A good thief tends to be taken for granted, and a bad (or simply out-played) one's errors or weaknesses are far more visible to their teammates than those of most other classes.  Thief is also often highly team dependent -- if my team is constantly wiping and losing teamfights the enemy is free to come harass me and undo my efforts, which is extremely visible to them while they wait to respawn and makes me an easy scapegoat for a loss.  A thief can keep an entire team afloat to a victory, but is forced to rely on her teammates to keep the enemy tangled up enough for her to perform.  That is the part a lot of non-thief players seem to forget.

After years of this dynamic it's also simply ingrained in many players to finger the thief as their weakest link, regardless of the match realities.

note that the phone number under your account's personal information is not the same as the SMS phone number.

Blech, I am guessing this is the crux of the issue then.  I wish that had been made clearer somewhere/I had figured this out when I updated my number on the site -- I did it promptly to try to avoid exactly this situation, lol.

Thank you very much for responding 🙂

  6. Hi all, I know that support tickets can sometimes take over a day to respond to, but as this involves accessing my account and as GW2, like many MMOs, has a number of time-sensitive activities (skirmish tracks, PvP decay, festival dailies) I was hoping there was some way to get my 2FA verified not through the absolutely horrible Google Authenticator app.  Yesterday morning my internet provider (also absolutely horrible) went out long enough that my router was assigned a new IP address, so upon trying to log in to the game I was asked for a security code.  Okay, no problem!  I had changed my phone number earlier this year but I had promptly updated my number in my account security settings so I should be getting that security code straight away, right?  Only I didn't, and waited and waited before finally learning that even though I have SMS authentication enabled *and* my current phone number on the site, I was supposed to be getting a code through the google authenticator app.  Okay, so I went to log into that, but all the codes it's giving me are 6 digit codes and Arenanet is requesting a five digit one.

Right, okay, so surely there's some workaround.  Support FAQs suggest logging into my account page and selecting an alternate authorization method.  I'd be happy to do that but I need a five digit code to log into the site, too!  Somebody did not pay attention when they put this FAQ section together.  So my Google app is giving me blatantly invalid codes, I am not receiving SMS notifications, and upon digging back into my email from 2014 or so *once upon a time* you could authorize log-ins via email recovery but I guess I can't do that anymore??? because it feels like that would be saving me and a lot of other people probably a lot of trouble if I could right now.

Anyway I submitted a support ticket yesterday morning and while I appreciate support replies are rarely prompt it is pretty frustrating that (like many people, I would imagine) I have a finite amount of time to play, had a bunch of fairly time-sensitive tasks I'd wanted to perform, and now have literally no idea as to when I'll be able to get back into the game, and another business day is about to close out with the weekend looming just ahead.  Is there *any* other way that anybody knows of to obtain your 2FA log-in code?  I just can't understand why they have a phone number and recovery e-mail on file when I cannot *use* my phone number or recovery email to recover.

    thank youuu 😞

Do u honestly think thiefs espec weapons not already set in stone and either finished or nearly finished?

Not at all, I'm sure it's well on its way to finished!  But I thought it would be nice to communicate to them that if it isn't sword or greatsword, there are plenty of people that will be happy about that.  Most of the topics here seem to communicate that if it isn't OH sword or greatsword, the devs are wrong/bad/stupid/there will be a riot.  It's nice to have positive reinforcement sometimes.

  8. That's all really.  I'm sure you're all already aware are that there are players out there quietly hoping for different and more creative weapons but I just wanted to say it out loud (and then get a bunch of angry comments probably, but such is life I guess).  Personally I'm hoping very very badly for a focus, so thieves can have a mobile magical spec like some of the Guild Wars 1 assassin skills provided.  I think in the hands of the teams responsible for the three elite specs we've already seen, a magic user specialization would be amazingly fun.

Anyway like I said that's all, thank you for all your hard work and the elite specs we've seen so far.
