...doesn't seem to be possible. Or else it requires something (other than character stealth) which isn't hinted at and which i have yet to discover.

Several students request you to steal scrolls for them as part of the renown heart, and the bookcases have an option to take a scroll which doesn't do anything (including triggering some sort of 'detection' dialogue.
