A new race wouldn't add anything other than JUST another aesthetic to put skins on ... this equals low value.

And to be clear, when we talk about what is value, it's not about what is value to YOU. It's about what is value to the whole playerbase AND to Anet.

I mean, the term 'Fashion Wars' exists for a reason. Collecting aesthetics is what a very large chunk of what this game is about. Adding a new race would play into that.

I'm sorry but that is a terrible idea. Anet has crafted such intricate races each with their own culture, religion, family structure, naming patterns, government, etc.

Even now its so easy to tell who said a quote SOLELY based on what they said and not what voice it was in. So if you took an asura VO and changed the pitch, it would be immediately clear who they took that voice from. It would ruin the races of tyria by being disingenuous and not true to how they talk or act.

It's something other games with cookie cutter races can do, but if you actually start to have unique races it becomes much harder, and why would you essentially taint your IP to do something so pointless.

Huh? The vast majority of story dialogue is exactly the same across all races. There's the occasional line that's more race-specific, but bringing in the voice actors to record something new for those lines would be completely doable. Aside from that, it's just the combat barks, which I imagine is what you're thinking of when you talk about identifiable quotes, and again, it wouldn't be a big deal to record new lines for that.

Well keep in mind it's 2 new voices only in ENGLISH. The game is voiced in French and German too. So it would be more like 6 new voices.

Honestly, when it comes to voices, I would say that the solution would be to not use new voices at all; use the old ones. Take, I don't know, the Asura VO, alter the pitch a little, layer on some bird sounds, and bam, you've got Tengu. You'd still need to record some new lines (the race-specific parts of the Personal Story, a few other voice lines in the story that are race-specific, probably some new combat barks), but it would bring it into the realm of a doable project.

Of course, that still leaves the issue of getting armor pieces working on a new race (although they have done a little of that with the Tengu).

Feature request: Skin and mount preview with selectable dyes

I wish the game had a skin preview window where I could freely choose to color the channels with all possible dyes, like in the Hero panel.

Sure, it is possible to enter dyes into the preview window by going to the Trading Post and previewing the dye, but it's clunky and annoying. And currently there's no way of previewing custom dyes on mounts, so you never know what a mount skin will actually look like with the dyes you want to use before you buy the skin.

Speaking of mount preview, it would be nice to have an option to see what the mount looks like with your character riding it, rather than only the mount by itself.

  5. If we're making requests for this sort of thing, I'd also like to call out the Head of Koda helm, the heavy armor helm for the Honor or the Waves dungeon armor set. Currently, it has three dye channels: the metal top of the helm, the leather side of the helm, and the little straps on the helm. So far so good. The problem is that the helm also has a fur pelt attached to it that hangs down the back like a small cape, and for some reason that pelt is on the same dye channel as the metal top, which severely limits your coloring options. So yeah, moving the pelt to its own dye channel--or even just moving it to the third dye channel; the straps are nearly invisible, so it's not like those being the same color would be an issue--would be nice.

The Cursor Contrast setting should be a part of the Dynamic HUD settings.

For example: In combat I want my cursor contrast to be set to high so that I can easily know where my cursor is. While out of combat I want my cursor contrast to be set to low or off when I am clicking around on small buttons in my inventory and the hero panel.

On the topic of the high-contrast cursor options, redesign them so that the cursor's hotspot is on the actual point of the cursor in all options. Having the hotspot end up inside the cursor makes it a lot less usable.

They mentioned that with these post-dragon expansions, they wanted to address some of the lingering mysteries of the setting (like, "what's the deal with the Wizard's Tower?" for instance), and there are some obvious follow-ups that could be done off of previous story events. The logical ones off the top of my head:

    • Return of the gods
    • A story where we finally learn who E is

(Personally I rather hope it's not these first two, as I'd like to get some non-human-centric stories before we go back to humans, but they are logical options.)

    • Dominion of Winds and the tengu
    • The Thing in the ocean
    • Malyck and the other Tree
    • Exploring the post-Primordus Depths of Tyria with the asura
    • Exploring the post-Jormag Far Shiverpeaks with the norn
    • Doing a proper visit to the charr Blood or Ash homelands

With the exception of the return of the gods option, they would all lend themselves to smaller-scale, non-world-threatening stories, which would be nice.

After the teaser image in the latest news piece, I'm feeling pretty good about my last guess.

    • Integrate something like the mount radial wheel into the core game.
    • Option to disable other players' infusions (while leaving on spell effects and the like).
    • Split more items off of Post-Processing into their own separate graphics options.
    • Yeah, a fishing bait bag would be a good move.
    • Severe consolidation of currencies.
    • Not something I'd personally make use of, but it is weird that GW2 doesn't have official controller support. It feels like a more natural fit for GW2 than it does for most other MMOs.

EDIT: Bah, that's more than five. Whatever, the list stands.

  9. Hey! An excuse to bust out the Hogfather quote:

    Quote

'You can't give her that!' she screamed. 'It's not safe!'
IT'S A SWORD, said the Hogfather. THEY'RE NOT MEANT TO BE SAFE.
    'She's a child!' shouted Crumley.
    IT'S EDUCATIONAL.
    'What if she cuts herself?'
THAT WILL BE AN IMPORTANT LESSON.

Animation usually is done in external studios with state of the art suits for motion capture, software and cameras, unless your developer is big enough to have those resources (Anet does not). In a distant interview I remember they named that the hiring of those facilities were around 25k $ x day. So they are re-using old animations to save cost. Of course, damages the excitement about new weapons, but also we should be honest: some of the EoD specs were really poor in terms of design and execution. Is a race to the bare bones...

Pretty sure they don't use motion capture in GW2. To the best of my knowledge, regular hand-made animations aren't the sort of thing typically farmed out to external studios.

What I'm wonderin' and hopin' now...is will Malyck make a return in the recent expansion? Like Zojia?

If by 'recent expansion' you mean in SotO? I profoundly doubt it. In some future expansion? Probably. They've said that one of their goals with these post-dragon expansions is to address some of the lingering mysteries in the game, and Malyck and the other Tree certainly fall in that category.
