No idea if this is going to help anyone but I will try to share my method:
You can start the 5/5 event gathering on your own.
At least for me it has always worked up until today so I assume unless it gets patched, it might always be possible.
I step into the circle to get the +1 and then just repeatedly log out/back in through the character select screen and for some reason it counts a +1 when logging back in.
No idea why but at least for me it has always been working.
Try it out, it might depend on how fast you can log back in etc. no guarantees.
