it IS getting stale dealing with the same backhanded treatment as red headed step child being thief.

Agreed it's every update now they sneak in a last minute Nerf or do a slight modification ( not a buff).  I work in technology and I work with developers and I can tell you first hand. These are the things that you do when you do not like a specific component. It's very passive aggressive. I'm at a point where I want to spend my dollars elsewhere.

The auto-attack SFX gets extremely grating quickly.

Maybe I'm missing something but I'm not really sure what the axe was supposed to provide that couldn't have been possible through buffing existing weapons. The short bow already gives us access to inconsequential AoE damage for tagging purposes.

SB just needed some buffs, with all that ground targeting it would have been perfect if they scaled it up for competitive mode.

Let's assume its the most average D/P Daredevil thief. The only mobility choices on such a build are shadowstep, steal, and shadow shot. Only two can be used to escape, Shadowstep and Steal. 1200+1200+450 comes out to 2850 distance. Let's even add on top of that with Shortbow 5, Infiltrators arrow. 900 distance. So an absolute maximum of 3750 over the course of 3 seconds (which is a bit of a stretch in 3 seconds alone), assuming that your only stunbreak wasn't used in the fight, and the core mechanic of the class wasnt used in the fight.

A situation that doesnt really happen. Unless it's a pve thief that doesnt want to fight players at all, which is kind of an outlier in this discussion.

While, I hear what you're saying mathematically you still can't do that within 3 seconds. You can't compile over 4 and 1/2 seconds of cast time into 3 seconds. That's not how math works.

Then I'll address  this specifically to you.  how can you expect to have a legitimate conversation regarding this topic in this or your perceived issue, If you're insulting or devaluing a specialization and or class the conversation becomes disingenuous. I don't walk into a discussion and immediately start insulting someone or a specialization/group and then expect them to have an informed discussion regarding this to come up with actual solutions to better a situation.

If you're saying to delete stealth my same argument would be then you would have to delete the other strong mitigations in the same game mode. Meaning you couldn't have any of the wonderful capabilities that mesmer have or the unique characteristics of dragon hunter much less guardian in the game because then there would be no counterplay to those capabilities. I do agree there are some changes to stealth that do need to be made but to start insulting the class and the community that it plays the class inside the thief forums probably won't benefit your argument much less, Have anyone from the powers that be looking at what you're expressing.

I think you have some potential ideas and I would love to hear you express them more meticulously in this space and I encourage you to express them with emphasis to solutions. Not just complaining about something that you don't like. We can all do better and we all want better for this game. At least that's my perception.

It's funny how you wrote wall of text to hide this gem clearly stating that fighting against teef is nothing more than a guessing game.

If this is your perceived insight towards how to play a game mode versus the skill combatant and yes, I could see that being your point. But I think you may be shortsighted to the overall concept of world versus world opposed to PVP.

  5. Just wanted to add one final note I understand where people are coming from as someone who didn't mean thief in different game modes and then moved to making thief just before the release of EOD. I can understand your frustration. Self reveal as a thief in competitive mode does exist (any initial attack done from stealth reveals the thief for 3 seconds. They cannot go back into stealth during that time) if you blind a thief even while in stealth or play any conditions while in stealth we are still affected by those effects (fear pull slow. Chill stun daze ect.).

Here's the secret, well it's not really secret. We're either coming towards you or away from you during an altercation know your environment ( because that's what thieves do we know our environment!)

Again, I understand you're frustration. Their are classes and builds out there that have even greater mobility can significantly mitigate more damage for a longer period of time. Is there classes out there with significantly more burst and substantially more cleansing/ barrier.

What I've seen over the last few years are a lot of people coming into competitive modes, specifically WVW with Zerg builds and trying to roam (if you're running back to your group from a long distance, you probably need to shift to a roamer build).

As someone who played an open world contested maps for world of Warcraft for way more years than I'll admit it was common practice that people run up on you and gank you with overpowered builds while you were on a farming build. Think of it like this. You wouldn't eat soup with a fork right? So why should you get rid of all forks because you're not using a spoon?

I encourage you take a little time and play the other classes. Play around with other builds. Learn the terrain and over time you'll learn to counter other classes and other builds. As a thief I've seen people put in some amazing work to pressure me and to bring me down on different builds from elementalist would extreme sustainability and good mobility, to willbenders with great mobility and great burst damage. To mesmers with great CC and damage mitigation.

It really depends on the skill level, understanding the other class, the terrain, and what you're looking to get out of the conflict. Remember it's called "thief" and the last time I checked these opposers of the common "men" do whatever it takes to get the most out of you ( a little role play doesn't hurt anybody).

I do think the awkwardness of placing the axes is part of why they made them do no damage - if they were damage fields, they'd either need to be ground-targeted, or players would end up having to go to great lengths to make sure that the axes ended up exactly where they wanted them. With the spinny axes doing no damage, the thief doesn't need to worry about where they are beyond "is the path going to be blocked when I use skill 3", and the overall power budget can be based on that assumption.

I suspect another reason is so that a stealthed thief can't be revealed by an enemy player deliberately walking into an axe. (Which, come to think on it, might also be part of the reason that thief traps were reworked into preparations).

    Yup 👍

My dear colleague, take a look at the topics around, it's all constant whining: "Remove stealth from thieves/remove damage from thieves/we don't care that they're already at rock bottom, delete this class because it's inconvenient for me to dominate them, they don't stand still, what did I pay you money for?!?!". And you know what? Their whining works. Don't worry, ANet will delete this class soon, I have no doubts.

The sad part is that the loudest" competent" content creators either shun thief, dog them out on their streams/ videos or Make content videos of them being destroyed by thieves because of their lack of skill set and then saying they're busted in all game modes.

On most other dps builds thief/isgarren seems to be best. ^^

I agree, and to answer your question, yes, for you.  After evading an enemy's attack, place the Eye of Isgarren on them for 6 seconds. So dodging or any evading skill activates it, no ICD. It seems to have no limit. I don't see any data or insight that says if someone else in your party/squad inflicts on an enemy if, you would also benefit from it. Only the caster benefits from the relic.

    Isgarren:
If you evade, you inflict the "eye of isgarren" status on the evaded opponent, which increases your damage on them by 10%.
Do eyes caused by other players also count when checking for the 10% dmg buff? Any internal cooldown for the eye?
Otherwise, you can probably keep the eye effect constantly up, even in an WvW-zerg environment, where half your players use support or other relics.

I've been running it in open world farming on thief and it's beast of relic

  10. I agree 100%. I think something that would help if the balance team was open to hearing more from the thief community would have effects upon initiative Depletion for defensive capabilities, damage mitigation capabilities, and or damage components. So basically if you're starved for initiative there would be a cause and effect basically higher risk/ higher reward methodology.  significant work has to be done on other trait lines like shadow arts, deadly arts acrobatics to make them more substantial so that trickery doesn't have to always be taken. And as you stated previously, it's imperative that we get another off hand weapon. I've heard in many different posts. People complaining about these having stealth and access to too much stealth, which confuses me because we are thieves after all and sneakiness is literally a cornerstone of a rogue/ thief/ mercenary.

I really want to run Celestials set which right now there is no real point on Thief

I may have taken the above statement out of context , and for that, I sincerely apologize in advance. With that said, celestial stats play a big role for thief, specifically in two modes of gameplay.

Solo Open world content- both the specter and the dead eye have some amazing gameplay with celestial gear for sustainability and survivability for the most challenging of content ( shout out to Lord Hizen)

Solo competitive combat- WvW condition/ support specter can run full celestial gear. It can Heal small groups, is a successful 1v1 roamer, and in the right hands is even a competent 1vX. Yes, I  intentionally left out celestial pistol pistol Daredevil ( that which shall not be named).

I too am looking forward to axe and hoping it's a hybrid weapon (hoping for a secondary support weapon with synergy for quickness in group content)

Spectre on the other hand has issues with the range of its boon application (it should be applied around both the caster and the tethered ally in my opinion), and struggles in some encounters where it does not start with any shroud. It's also completely un-useable in any encounter with high damage pressure (Boneskinner).

So what I found that helps is running the right gear either Plague Doctor or  Minstrel with herald runes or durability runes I've run Boneskinner many times since this patch no issues.

skills that help with burst - Shadow RefugeShadowstep,  Blinding PowderMeasured ShotWell of GloomWell of BountyWell of SilenceShadowfallEternal Night. and the big daddy of all Consume Shadows after dropping out of  Shadow Shroud.

if all else fails  Infiltrator's Strike spamming works too.

    Specter

Alacrity specter is another build that is overperforming in terms of damage. This is partially due to the base alacrity duration being long enough to require minimal investment into concentration, but also due to the lack of a significant damage tradeoff in the grandmaster trait slot. We’ll be tuning up Strength of Shadows while bringing down some of specter’s other damage sources to bring the alacrity build more in line without negatively affecting the damage builds.

Lastly, we’re increasing the protection duration of Shadow Sap to ensure that healing-focused specter builds have a reliable source of group protection.

    • Shadestep: Reduced alacrity duration from 2 seconds to 1.25 seconds in PvE only.
    • Strength of Shadows: This trait no longer reduces incoming damage and no longer increases the duration of torment inflicted by Rot Wallow Venom, but instead increases torment damage by 25% in addition to converting vitality to expertise.
    • Larcenous Torment: This trait no longer increases torment damage, and instead steals health from an enemy when you apply torment to them.
    • Shadow Sap: Increased protection duration from 2.5 seconds to 4 seconds in PvE only.

interested to see how this plays out (Shadow Sap: Increased protection duration from 2.5 seconds to 4 seconds in PvE only.)

This is a good adjustment (Shadestep: Reduced alacrity duration from 2 seconds to 1.25 seconds in PvE only. )

Also why aren't some changes listed into the patchnote ?

To answer your question. They said on their live stream that the live stream was the most up-to-date and that some of the information that's on the live stream would not be listed on the passion notes.....

Not sure if you're still looking at making any additional changes to the upcoming patch or taking additional feedback, but here goes....

Since we're moving alacrity, why not add  Aegis to  Traversing Dusk - Heal allies in the area around you when you shadowstep. Gain shadow force for each ally in the radius. Wells grant Ageis (.5s) on their initial impact.

    1. This would help round out the support specialization that you're looking from Specter in competitive mode and PVE.

    2. With a short duration it turns into a on "demand mode" play style which I think 🤔 that's what you're looking for as a development team.
