One alternative to permadeath, in this kind of challenges... specially when the content gets a lot harder with just white or fine equipment, is to do it "a la Minecraft". Send all your money to someone, or spend it all in some kind of goodies... and then destroying all your equipment.
It´s still difficult, but less frustrating. If the challenge that a person is doing, is one of no utility skills (7,8,9,0).. I think we should allow a white single-handed weapon at least. If we consider using utility skills, we would could consider not leaving any kind of weapon at all after death.
