  1. I think the lack of signposting to the mechanics is a problem. Strikes are meant to be a step towards raids, but many raids have much more clearly signposted mechanics, as do many meta events. If you're a mostly open world player giving it a try for the first few times, a message like "don't let the lights go out" and something indicating that you need to relight the torches would be a much better idea. Even having the boneskinner go invulnerable for the first time or something?

The mechanics are fine, but there's nothing really telling a new player that the mechanics even exist.

  2. At a certain point in the concert, firework launchers will appear on stage (near the front). Activate one of them and look upwards - little circles will begin to appear. Aim so that there's one in the centre of your screen then press 1 to activate the firework skill. You might have to do it a few times to get it right.

If there is another activity going on at the same time, it's easy to miss, so watch the notifications.

This isn't a complaint, I'm just curious as to whether others had a similar perception . . .

My exact first thought upon seeing Bangar up close was "there will be very specific fan art of this".

The model is really well done and I agree about the Disney comment above. He will certainly have his fans.

Go into fractals (and dungeons, particularly ones with insta-kill mechanics where you have to read the cues or you'll be downed) and start working up the tiers. Several of them have mechanics that are seen in raids, like the orbs in Nightmare. Mai Trin is a good one to master as you have to follow the mechanics or it's literally impossible. Likewise Cliffside. Swampland's final boss is like a shorter, weaker version of a raid boss as there is a lot going on with clear phases. Fractals are also quite lucrative if you do the dailies, which should help get to where you need to be. You'll get the odd bit of ascended equipment drop, too.

I think LS2 has a couple of raid-ish bosses as they often focus heavily on one or more mechanics that you have to take care of. The final-ish boss in LS2 is very raid-like as you have to be very aware of the whole field and can't just DPS it down. The Living World bosses generally are pretty good practice, as lots of them have finicky mechanics that you need to pay attention to. Trying not to give spoilers here, but ones like the final boss in the Lake Doric episode or the Facets of (Whatever) in LS2 are great solo training for raid mechanics, just expect longer, tougher fights and remember that you'll usually be in a squad of ten and need to know when to stack and when and where to split.

Raids are 80% knowing what to expect and what to do and 20% being good in combat. Treat every one like a puzzle boss with a known solution and you won't do too badly. Pay attention to cues - there aren't many surprises if you know what to look for. YouTube is probably the best resource for this.

Raiding originated in the class of text MUDs known as DikuMUD, which in turn heavily influenced the 1999 MMORPG EverQuest, which brought the raiding concept into modern 3D MMORPGs.

I love stuff like this, thank you. There's a lot of shared language in gaming and lots of it goes way back in terms of modern RPG gaming. I mean, lots of them go back to D&D or MUDs. D&D cribbed heavily from literature like Conan the Barbarian and the works of Tolkien (who pretty much codified elves and dwarves as we know them now), who cribbed from Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic mythology stylistically.

I think there's a lot to be said for game design and the culture it creates. BDO has mandatory PVP that you cannot opt out of, whereas in GW2 it's strictly opt-in. WoW has the unholy tank-healer-dps trinity baked into the dungeon finder, whereas GW2 encourages self-sufficiency in character builds and skills that interact. The rewards in GW2 are non-competitive and there is a small experience bonus for reviving other players, so it's rewarded early on and that cultivates good player interaction. The core game philosophy was really good and this has been maintained and built upon really well.

I just assumed it was a step consistent with the first two steps where you salvage the item to get a Gift of Blah. I admit I made a mistake, but the support page says to contact them in cases such as this so I have. I'm not going to pretend what I did was clever, but it was an honest misunderstanding on my part based on a previously established pattern of activities so I thought it was worth a try to get the item reinstated.

  8. I put in a low-priority (in the grand scheme of things - it's pretty annoying for me; misunderstood instructions and salvaged my precursor thinking I'd need a Gift of Blah from it, like with every other step in legendary crafting) ticket in on Monday morning and it's now Friday.

I appreciate that new content comes with new bugs and the complexity of the skyscale collection chain leaves more room for error, but four days feels like quite a long time. It had some sort of 'activity' 3 days ago, which I assume means being assigned to a queue or something. Is there a way to check the estimated response time?

I also think that there are several shield skills that just don't benefit group play so will never be recommended as meta. For example, guardian shield 5 pushes enemies out of AoEs. The rest either don't directly benefit the group or are rather weak in group compositions, so other options are better.

Chronomancer shield 5 provides boons, crowd control and does a respectable amount of damage and shield 4 is the "opt out of combat for a second and a half" button that can also provide protection for the party. .

I'd love a decent shield build, and that's literally why I levelled a mesmer. In the end it turned out chronomancer is really fun, but some stronger shield options would be cool.

  10. In defence of mesmers...

Chronos in meta situation basically drop AoEs and DoTs then go back to hack and slash. They're sword-and-shield fighters who cast more than they're casters who hold a shield. Strong AoE, excellent crowd control and the easiest tank in the game.

Don't let the light armour and disco butterflies fool you; at their strongest they're an upfront melee class. Phantasms are basically fire and forget DoTs and clones are basically crowd control and meatshields you can turn into a bomb.

I get you. I really do. I can do some raid bosses, but there reaches a point where I just don't enjoy it. I find playing with guildies on voice chat helps, but I am kind of neutral to raids and the whole "150LI" nonsense. I've tanked veil guardian and Gorseval once or twice, I can do it again. I don't need to have done it 20 times. I've actually started by just going into 9/10 groups looking for chronos and saying I'm a support chrono and we can start and see how it goes or I can leave and 90% of the time I get in. Raid culture is silly.

I get that they're meant to be mechanically challenging, but they feel like a slog. I like the idea of a 'training' raid with 50% health or something, just so I can play them without to make it into a marathon event.

When I tried out tier 3 fractals for the first time, people flamed me so hard for sucking. I not only got kicked out, but I actually felt sorry for my teammates coz I know I messed up.

People say it a lot, but I've found it to be true: tier 4's are easier because you've got more experienced players. I play support chrono in fractals, and I remember being kicked out of one T3 party for suggesting we try the mechanics rather than die repeatedly trying to out-DPS a boss for the fourth time.

In T4's people are much more chilled out because they know it's hard and they know what can and can't be skipped. T3's are notorious for toxicity. When people hit T4's, they're normally much more fault-tolerant, but also better players and more able to support themselves and their whole party. You do get the odd person who doesn't know something (like thinking mesmers had 4 seconds of invulnerability on demand whenever so they can just out-tank AoE effects), but that's fine because no one knows the game perfectly.

Honestly, make it your mission to hit AR150 and get in on T4s when you can. They're as smooth as T2's with none of the toxicity of T3's.

    Sorry for sucking guys!

Honestly, I don't think you suck; I think you've been partnered up with people whose attitude sucks. I've cleared raids with 3 out of 10 people never having tried a raid before. Finding a good guild that communicates and has a focus on fun over efficiency goes a long way in this game.

Remember: it's a game. The purpose is to entertain yourself. Do what you want to do. Don't feel bad because other people have different goals.
