Regarding Phantasm design

I have been wondering this for a while, but... Is there any reason as to why phantasms can be targeted and destroyed?

Now hear me out.

 

Back in the day, when phantasms were something that persisted in time, it made sense for them to be able to be destroyed by whomever you're fighting, as they would keep repeating their attack animation until shattered or killed.

 

But after the change that made phantasms effectively part of your skill animation, is there any purpose design-wise that I'm missing as to why they can't be invulnerable while they do their attack animation?
