Companion's Defense has no effect if you're out of combat.If you engange a fight in melee and dodge the first attacks, you lose your endurance, but you don't trigger this trait.Although if you want to stack the buffs before fighting, you can't do this. There is no reason why you don't get the bonus out of fight, but paying it costs (endurance)
