You can be top dmg in conquest very easily if you're fighting someone who doesnt expect or cannot focus on you. Now you're in a little box where everyone knows exactly where you are at all times, which means your performance is now based on how well you can press your buttons and keep your team standing vs people that expect you. Both statements can be true without the matchmaker being wrong. If you're rocking a oneshot ranged build that collapses the moment anyone makes eye contact with it, and can't keep yourself alive in that scenario, that would explain it prefectly.
