So I'm terrible. Like, really terrible. I have 1000 hours on my account since starting at launch primarily from filling WoW boredom gaps with doing a bit of story and T1 fractals, usually on a different boosted 80 each time. Because of this, I'm not invested in any particular class/character and find it hard sticking around in the game.
With this in mind, I'm mechanically uneducated, have very little understanding of classes/roles/maps and instead just have a character select screen full of 80s across classes. I don't have the muscle memory to be able to hit spells whilst also watching conditions/boons, and have no idea of the signals of other classes so my games typically involve me running in mashing buttons. Currently that happens to be on a Hammer Catalyst, where the depths of my decision making is 'I'm dying, so I should be in earth/water' with no considerations for cooldowns and such. This appears to gauge me at Silver 2.
I've watched a few video guides on the subject, especially like Shadowfall's 'Easiest classes in PvP tier list', but I guess it doesn't really give me the detail I'm after to make an educated decision. In terms of PvP I'm a long-term 2.2k rated player from WoW so have somewhat of an understanding of what PvP entails however I'm probably skill/effort-capped at that level, but it's not translating to GW2 as easily as I'd assumed. I completely understand that I can try before I buy and play any PvP class at level 2, however in WoW what got me from 1.6k to 2k+ was committing to a class to build my muscle memory for individual playstyles so that I could focus more on what was happening around me. When your internal timing knows that a skill should be coming off CD and you don't need to look at your action bars, I found it allowed me to see so much more of the game.
Even the 'play what you like' argument doesn't fit me yet, as I don't really know what that brings about either. My only criteria I intend to force on myself is that before I play another class, I want to log a minimum 500hrs on a single one. So, here goes for my wishlist...
I would prefer a class where my primary responsibilities are smaller fights rather than joining an epileptic blob. Running off to 1v1 a side node or joining a 1v1 to tip the scales are where I'd like to picture myself.
I would like a class that has relatively low intensity/forgiving builds whilst I learn what to focus on (no point occupying myself in playing piano and then spending full games staring at action bars instead of growing situational awareness)
Whilst 'carry' is definitely the wrong word for where I sit now, I suppose I'd like a class which is reasonably independent (especially of own-team comp, so not reliant on a pocket-support and such)
I think from a 'class fantasy' perspective, my only turn-off is probably thief
I have no preference between power/condi
I don't particularly want a support class right now, though would be nice to have a viable spec for future (but not a must)
Not a big fan of pet classes where I need to put a large emphasis on pet micro-management... having some autoattacking NPC next to me is ok I guess
I'm not precious on ranged vs melee, either is fine
I don't think I'd be motivated by classes which rely on cheese burst. I think I've read that scrapper has this right now?
I'll be eternally grateful for whoever can help direct me; I know the forums must get so bored of these posts but I'm very stuck.
