I think its pretty straightforward - Anet is beholden to international sanction laws, and due to Russia invading Ukraine, there have been a number of sanctions against the country by not just the USA, but by numerous UN and NATO-affiliated countries throughout the world

These sanctions prevent business from being done in Russia in many different forms, and so if there's a law against it there's really not much Anet can do about it

As Rubi said, however, these regulations change and evolve over time, and I would imagine that as certain sanction ease, especially with global focus shifting towards Israel and Palestine, they may find themselves able to do business in Russia once more

Anet and NCSOFT are businesses - if they're allowed to, they'll do business in Russia. I think its fair to say that this isn't a mere error, and Rubi has confirmed that this is the case.

We're well aware of that. I just wanted to get official confirmation from ArenaNet that this is not a mistake, but a real change in Russia's status. In any case, we are still in a state of financial lockdown. Steam remains the only feature to directly purchase Guild Wars 2 from Russia, but the problem is that all of the game's expansions are not available there. Only the core version with the Soto expansion, so I'm interested to see if ArenaNet plans to provide all expansions for purchase.

Hello! I can let you know that we do audit and update that list periodically based on various factors, including evolving regulations.

Thank you for taking the time to reply!

Does this mean that the decision to unblock Russia is an official decision of NC Soft and ArenaNet, and can we expect all expansion packs to appear on Steam? Since at the moment there is only the core version of Guild Wars 2 with the Soto expansion?

@Rubi Bayer.8493 I'd be interested in that as well, specifically interested in who determines which countries are included on the list. Is it ArenaNet or NCSoft?

Thank you for your interest in this issue! I would appreciate it if Rubi could actually provide an answer. As a guild leader of a large Russian-speaking community, I can confirm that this topic has excited thousands of players from Russia, but I cannot confirm the new status of Russia without an official answer from ArenaNet.

It is unlikely you will get an answer on the forum.  You can send a support ticket via the 'Support' link above/below and ask about the issue.

    Good luck.

If you want to search for answers for yourself, ArenaNet, as USA located business, is bound to these rules by the USA State:

Greetings, I'm not looking for an answer to the Russia blocking question. We here are well aware that gaming is a business and companies risk sanctions by cooperating with Russia. If you read my post carefully, I am asking the administration of the company “why Russia disappeared from the list of blocked countries” and now buying Guild Wars 2 is available from Russia. As well as registering a new account (although for two years we could not register accounts). I just want to make sure that this is not some mistake on ArenaNet's part, but really a change of policy towards Russia.

  6. Hello everybody!

I would like to receive an official response from ArenaNet representatives regarding the unblocking of the Russian region.

Since June 2022, Russia has been on the list of blocked countries. We could not buy the game, as before, directly from our country. Just a few days ago, we discovered that the Steam version of Guild Wars 2 in Russia has become available for download (trial version). Today we saw that Russia has disappeared from the page of blocked countries:

We also managed to register a new account on the official website from Russia. Today I contacted the Guild Wars 2 support team with a request to comment on these changes, but they replied that they did not have such information.

In this regard, I ask Arenanet employees who are authorized to answer such questions to give an answer in this topic.

    Thanks!

But also this would cause WvWers to have a hissyfit since many think guilds are too large for world restructuring and that the 500 man cap need to be reduced.

Why can the alliance only be in WvW mode? Why can't it be a PvE alliance? Have you not thought about it? Without the need for the player to join up to 5 guilds at a time. If you can see the chat of all the alliance guilds.

Considering that Alliances in WvW are going to be limited to 500 players, its not going to happen. The devs want players filtered into many small guilds, not keep joining superguilds with 1k+ players.

How is guild "A" chat supposed to see guild "B" chat if guild "A" has no available seats? To do this, I have to kick someone out of guild "A" and take someone else in his place.

Hi all, I'm the guild leader of a large community in Guild Wars 2. When our main guild reached the 500 member limit, we had to open a main guild academy. But now we've run into another problem: academy players can't see the main guild chat, which makes communicating and finding a group quite difficult. Yes, you can say "use discord," but those who are in discord are not always in the game and vice versa.

We are asking ArenaNet to implement "Alliance Chats" that would combine two (or three) guilds into one and make communicating and finding a group easier. Or expand the guild roster to 1000 members. With the release of the add-on, this would be very relevant!

  11. Hello everyone!

On May 25, the Living World Seasons free giveaway campaign starts. In this regard, the players of free accounts have a question: will the seasons be unlocked on free accounts? Let's say I started playing during the promotional weeks, and in July I buy a game. Will I have the seasons of the Living World unlocked for free? Or in order to open them, I need to buy the game before the start of the promotion?

Orc Podcaster is the largest MMO blogger in Russia. But he does not cover any one project. He makes a video about everything. Lost Ark, ArchAge, WoW, Conquerors Blade and much, much more. But most of his audience came precisely through videos about WoW. As you know, the audience of this game is many times greater than GW2. And this game is completely localized in Russian.

  13. I never heard about you so you shouldn’t overestimate yourself :) did they elect you or who said that you represent other people? Or is it something you say about yourself?

It's ridiculous! How can you hear about me if I don't exist? And, let me know where you live to hear about me? If not in Russia, then it would be strange to know about me. I do not broadcast in English, my language is not represented in the game. People from my country cannot be Anet's partners. How should you find out about me? :-D But now they’ve definitely found out!

    Nice to meet you!

  14. Maybe they don’t want or can’t answer to the request because they have not thought about it or can’t say anything to you. You can’t force someone to answer. Because for the last seven years there did not seem to be a problem or the need for Cyrillic.

I don’t know why it is important that you call yourself the largest GW2 blogger in Russia? You think you will get a special treatment?

The fact that I am the largest blogger in Russia for this game suggests that I appeal not only on my behalf, but I represent the interests of the whole community. But you are fixated on the fact that I'm big.

I already answered you before that 7 years ago, Guild Wars 2 didn’t have any blogger at all, so no one represented the interests of people in this game. There was simply no person who could take on this responsibility. Everyone played scattered piles.

And no, our appeal makes us unique, because we are not just letters on the page. We are real people who live in different countries, but speak Russian. You can write anything you want. Most people are not even responsible for their words! But when people show themselves to society, then they probably know what they are going to ..

    Hello from Russia, My friends!

In this video, the Russian-speaking gaming community of Guild Wars 2 request ArenaNet to start supporting Cyrillic letters in the game. I know that these problems not only Russian players , but also many other countries. Unfortunately, I cannot be responsible for everyone, but I can be responsible for those with whom I play. Do not remain indifferent to our problem and support our appeal!

    How much will you pay?

    Pay for what?

Perhaps I will upset you, but I’ve recently been a streamer and talked about the same things that you are talking about in your post. So not all streamers are the same ... It's sad, but nobody (like you) will hear me. Me, because Anet is not interested in a Russian-speaking audience. Recently, we wrote a whole appeal and held a meeting in the game. The answer is ZERO. But they won’t hear you, because you’re the same drop in the bucket as the other players. It is only through pushing one's interests that one can push through. But who will take it? This does not interest anyone ...But your idea is great! Good luck!

  17. @Ol Nik.2518 said:

Considering that GW2 chat already supports Korean and Traditional Chinese, it very much might be that support for Cyrillic requires only a change of font. If this is the case, the price tag on this change is about $2000 ($500-1000 for a commercial font licence and $1000 for updating dependencies). I am quite sure that Russian-speaking players spend more than $2000 a year on this game. In fact, they could just crowdsource the money needed to implement this update.

I am ready to pay the company if necessary. We are ready to raise money and pay the company the services of introducing the Cyrillic alphabet, if it comes to 1000-2000 dollars.

  18. We do not know the “why” they do not enter the Cyrillic alphabet. If we received an official response (whatever it may be), we would calm down and live with any decision of the company. Silence in response creates only uncertainty. I believe that in order to fully understand our requests, you need to live a little in our body. The easiest way to talk about something that you have never lost.

  19. I did not distort anything. But in a forum everyone can express their opinion, even if it is a different opinion than yours. Accepting different opinions is an essence of a democratic society. And to say that you only hear skepticism is just wrong. There was a lot of support. So where did you get this from, that you only hear skepticism?

Thank you, but we are not interested in the link two years ago with a request to translate the game into Russian. We speak English as you see. Yes, sometimes with pronunciation problems. But we make full use of the English language in raids, fractals, map chat, etc. But we would like to talk with a friend in our native language. We are not interested in localization.

Though, one never knows what the future may bring. Whilst awaiting any possible changes, one might consider taking advantage of other possible venues of communication.

(Do also consider: Moderation of the thread means it has been officially noticed.)

    Good luck.

Where is this thread with Dev response?
