System Locking Up/Blue Screen Crashes

Recommended Posts

Since the update last night (8/24 around 8 or 9 pm EST) I've experienced several system lockups/full blue screen shut downs while playing. The first two happened while standing in Armistice Bastion, the first immediately after doing the patch, and the second 10-15minutes after. Trying to wait out the first system lock up resulted in a blue screen shut down. The second time it happened I forced shut down my laptop before it reached that stage. I was then able to play in WvW without any issues the rest of last night. Today, however, I have had three more system lockups while playing, the first earlier today when the game locked up while on a load screen for Armistice Bastion, I forced the shut down rather than waiting it out. More recently, I've had two additional lock ups, the first while trying to complete events in the new Archipelago zone, I tried to wait this one out but received another blue screen shut down. Following that one I tried to repair the GW2 files and also ran my computer's support assist to see if there were driver updates or any other issues but nothing was detected. I tried playing again and went into my next story mission (the first one that has you enter the Wizard's Tower) only to have my system lock up again. These last two crashes I did notice that the first signs are that NPC dialogue and combat sound effects stop playing, though the in game music continues to play. I was also playing on my holosmith during both and my holoforge attack effects stopped displaying, though the attacks were still causing damage. Hovering over any skills caused blank tooltips to appear rather than actually displaying their text. At the point that I noticed these symptoms I was already unable to switch windows off of Guild Wars 2, I could not close the game even through Alt+F4, and waiting to see if anything would resolve resulted in the blue screen shut down. Is anyone else experiencing this issue and is there anything else I can try to resolve this?

This isn't a lot of information about your system and configuration to go on.  All I can say is if you are getting Blue Screens, your system is unstable.  The game could be putting a new demand on it that is triggering this instability.  You need to start troubleshooting with the BSODs.

Edit: If you have a fairly new motherboard and DDR5 ram, try updating the BIOS. Or try it anyway. I believe this is what fixed it for me.

The other thing to try is delete all contents in AppData>Local>Temp since GW2 stores a lot of temp files there.

I've been getting game closes and sometimes graphics error messages since the expansion. It is particularly frequent in Armistice Bastion. I guess that place is extra intensive even just sitting there. Tried about 30 different things so far, updated drivers, redownloaded the game, downscaled windows resolution + min graphics settings, etc...

The latest thing that might have worked was deleting (renaming) the Local.dat file to let the game generate it again. It's located in Users>[Username]>AppData>Roaming>Guild Wars 2. Redownloading the game doesn't do this. Export keybinds and screenshot settings before that though. My old file was 76MB and the fresh file is 20MB, even with identical settings saved so something was off there. What I read was the Local.dat gets bloated over time and potentially corrupted.
