Block works against ground damage (circles)?

I'm trying the staff block (5), but I feel that doesn't block ground damage (circles) and I die. It says "block" like normal. But I remember playing in the past ranger and revenant, they had blocks that, as I know, work the same, and my memories is that they blocked ground too. Am I doing or understanding something wrong, or blocks never worked against them?

If the block is active and there isn't a glitch of some sort, then odds are that you're being hit by unblockable attacks. Can you give us more to the context?

I was fighting a willbender and a chrono, it's all I can remember. Do you mean it should be blockable?

EDIT: I tried again and it felt it blocked ground, but I'm not sure. Maybe it was some unblockable ground aoe...

There are enemies who hit through staff 5.

Like the female Charr champ in battle for lions arch. 

And it's a ground aoe attack. The one that yeets you 10 miles.

You should be able to block aoe (ground targeted) skills as long as they are not unblockable (or enemy get an unblockable stack from somewhere else ^^)

keep in mind that while you block aoe/ground related attacks you cant block stuff like  guardian's staff 5 or hammer 5 (both warding lines that cc if you cross it).

Unblockables most likely.
I face dragon hunters and what not in spvp and blocking is the to go answer for their trap spam when Defiant Stance isn't available.
So yes - blocks do block ground aoe as well, so long it's not unblockable.
