  1. Hey everyone,

    A quick update.

In our last post, we mentioned we were investigating an issue that caused roughly 2400 players to be assigned to the wrong Team. We just pushed a change that should reassign those individuals to the proper WvW Guild and team for both NA and EU. You will need to log out to character select for this to take effect. Note: if you weren't assigned to the proper team because you selected your WvW guild AFTER the Dec 2 guild selection deadline, this change will not benefit you. This only fixes players that were in the glitched state. If you're still on the wrong team after relogging and you're 100% sure you selected your team prior to the Dec 2 deadline, please continue to report the issue below.

FYI - the source of truth for knowing which Team you're assigned to is shown in the attached image. The main WvW panel should not be trusted because of the visual bug that I mentioned in the original post. If your "currently assigned team" matches the team your guild was assigned to, you likely just need to fully relog to be properly placed.

  2. Hi all,

We’re pleased to report that WvW World Restructuring was successfully enabled on European servers at 10AM Pacific (UTC-8) this morning.

We've identified three issues with World Restructuring so far, and as of right now we feel comfortable leaving the feature enabled while we investigate and we still plan to enable it for North American players at their reset later today. These tests are the best way for us to identify edge cases with the system, so the next week is going to be invaluable for the long-term effort of World Restructuring. Thank you for your patience and assistance!

    Now, onto the issues.

First, we’re investigating an issue that caused a small number of players (about 1400 in EU, 900 in NA) to be placed on the incorrect Team. This is the top issue the team is looking into right now and we have a few solid leads on the root cause. We'll provide an update as soon as we're able to.

Second, there's a visual bug that’s causing the WvW menu (and other related UI such as objective markers) to show incorrect team names or ownership. Again, this is purely visual and doesn’t relate to your actual Team placement. To verify which team you’ve been assigned to, navigate to the World Restructuring panel in the WvW menu and review your “Currently Assigned Team”. We’re still investigating the root cause of this issue, but a relog or map change may resolve the problem for you in the short-term. As a reminder, to be matchmade with your WvW guild of choice, you were required to select a guild from the World Restructuring menu prior to 11:59PM Pacific (UTC-8) on December 2. Any selections made after this point were not factored into matchmaking.

The third issue is that players will receive a vague “access denied” message when attempting to join World vs World if they weren’t assigned a team. This could occur if they didn’t select a WvW guild prior to last night’s deadline or if they hadn’t played WvW in the past 30 days. To resolve this, open the WvW panel, navigate to the World Restructuring panel, and select a Team. You should be able to join properly after this.

If you’re experiencing issues with the system, please respond back to this thread with the following information:
    •    Your assigned team (find this information in the World Restructuring - BETA menu):
    •    Your original home shard (example: Gandara, Blackgate)
    •    The name of the WvW guild you selected in the World Restructuring menu and if it was selected before last night’s deadline:
    •    A description of the issue:

As a reminder, the World Restructuring system is still early in its development. There are a lot of features we’d like to add (including Alliances), but those will come once we’ve solidified the foundations of the system. For an overview of our plans, please see this blog post: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/studio-update-world-restructuring-and-the-future-of-world-vs-world/

World Restructuring beta will end at the next reset on December 10.

Thanks all. We’ll continue to give updates as we have more information.

  3. Hi folks,

Just a courtesy reminder. World vs World will be temporarily disabled this morning while we apply some server updates in anticipation of the World Restructuring beta later this week. We'll provide an update when it's back up. More information here:

  4. Lots of interesting discussion here. I'd like to reiterate, as we mentioned prior to the Nov 9 update, we're keeping a close eye on the pip/repair changes. If the changes don't achieve our goals, we'll make additional adjustments. I don't anticipate any adjustments in the near-term, but that could change as we continue to get more data.

I did want to note that WvW playtime (average time spent per player on a WvW map) has been on an upward climb since the beginning of November - both before and after the changes. The number of active WvW players is also pretty much inline with typical week-to-week fluctuations. There's been some "gaem mode is ded" talk here, so I just wanted to clear that up.

  5. Posted this elsewhere, wanted to make sure I put it on the forums as well:

A quick follow-up here regarding the removal of the outnumbered pip bonus.

Looking at the sources of pips, outnumbered is a small percentage (7%) of overall pip gains compared to ranks and placement, despite the fact that outnumbered is a huge bonus (+5). The changes outlined in the blog (+2 baseline pips) are intended to provide more players, more pips, in more scenarios.

It's worth keeping in mind that the entire point of World Restructuring is improving population balance across match ups. The ability to benefit from outnumbered exists to the degree that it does currently because population isn't balanced as well as it could be. We're experimenting with this change now because the goal is that world population balance will improve with World Restructuring, meaning that the outnumbered bonus will be even more difficult to benefit from in the future.

And, I know this is hard to believe (trust me, I get it), but if we don't see the results we're looking for from this change, we'll make additional adjustments.

Removing outnumbered pips is sad but I suppose the boosted base make up for it.

Participation on repair is weird though since the opposite end of halfheartedly repairing walls isnt mentioned, afking on siege.

Siege is on our radar. The right solution for this (diminishing returns) requires some engineering time, which we aren't able to prioritize quite yet.

Are we gonna get a recap / explanation this week?  This is just a friendly reminder. 🙂

Posting my reply from another thread:

    Hey folks,

Thanks for your patience. The process took a bit longer than I anticipated - that's on me. We wrapped up the draft of the blog post today and it's now being routed through our editing team and localization (for DE/FR/ES players). It was over 1,500 words last I looked, so it'll take a few days for that to get processed. Early next week is a safe bet.

  9. It's been a busy week! The team has been digging into the data we gathered last week and we're at a point where we have a really solid understanding of what went wrong and what we need to do before we can attempt it again. In my last post I mentioned we're going to share a post-mortem of the issues we ran into and what we learned. Now that we've identified the root issues and we have a plan in place to tackle them, the writing comes next! We're out of office tomorrow, but our goal is to have it posted next week sometime. I'll let you know if our plans change.

Happy re-links tomorrow! I hope to see some of you at reset.

  10. Thank you for your patience today, everyone. Obviously things didn't go the way we had intended, but it was still an incredibly valuable exercise for the team. We learned a lot, to say the least. We aspire to have our testing environments mirror the Live servers as much as possible, but there's nothing like having thousands of real players crash into a system all at once to expose issues!

To address some baseless FUD I've been seeing in some community corners, our long-term plans for World Restructuring remain unchanged. We still intend to approach feature development iteratively and keep you informed of progress every step of the way, including the successes and failures. Like the opening post mentioned, we will pull together a post-mortem analysis of the issues that impacted today's beta and share it openly with the community. Closely examining what went wrong - and remembering to celebrate what went right - is incredibly important in software/game development. If you want a refresher on our philosophical approach to World Restructuring, check out this blog post.

I did want to extend both a heartfelt thank you to all of the server leaders, guild leaders, and commanders that rallied their communities for this first beta test. We've been keeping a close eye on server communities the past few weeks to better understand the social dynamics involved with the shift to World Restructuring. I know it must be frustrating to see your organization efforts not pay off today, but we'll be back as soon as we can to give it another shot.

In case this post gets some traction, I did want to reconfirm that the WvW Bonus XP Event will remain active as planned. World relinks will come with next week's reset.

Have a great weekend and see you next week,

So if I am a solo player who selects their storage guild well only guild as a WvW Guild am I not a solo player?

Interesting question. You'd technically be matchmade as a guild, but it wouldn't change your placement really since we look at your WvW activity. Your WvW activity would be the exact the same if you matchmade as a solo player or as part of a 1 player guild.

I have heard of many guilds that are merging into a new guild to be their WvW guild for the Phase 1 Beta, so they can stay together for the week and/or test their alliance membership.  Is this going to affect your overall data-gathering, with folks trying to create their alliances before you're even testing alliances in matchmaking?

I think they'll be interesting data points for us to take a look at! We're not terribly concerned at the present moment. The current planned alliance cap is 500 players, the same number of players that can stack in a single guild.
