The only concrete problem I see is : what happens when classes have circled through all existing weapons and we still need new e-spec ?

The current system would permit them to change the behavior of already used weapons depending on the specialization.

However, if they unlock weapons for all specs everytime a new spec is created, they’ll soon reach a dead end (for warriors first most likely).

Current system is future proof. However making that change would be like them eyeing the end of gw2

That would be my 1 concern.

After EOD warriors will have 5 more weapons they can be given. (+ Trident if they ever wanted to do a more underwater focused expansion.)

Are we going to get more then 5 more expansions from GW2?

That would be 8 especs + core for every profession. 81 total combinations.

If the answer is yes then they could always it so especs that reuse a weapon could replace the weapon instead I guess.

If they were really that concerned then they could at least give a few extra weapons to the most at need core professions.

Which I guess really is Engineer.

Renegade Shortbow on its own is really no different from other Revenant weapons… they tap into the mists to enhance the power of the weapon… the main difference for SB is that it can inflict burning… but that’s not special enough to make it elite spec only.

Chronomancer Shield is not much different from shield on any other profession. It has a block ability and a “bash” ability… the time theme to it is also not very pronounced… infact all of the abilities it uses can easily be connected to core Mesmer with zero effort.

Holosmith Sword… this one might pose some problems… but given the nature of the Engineer in general… it’s hardly outside the realm of reason.

Druid Staff still fits the central core theme of Ranger… a master of Nature… not every weapon has to be focused on damage either, look at Guardian Staff, it is also primarily a healing weapon…

Nothing about the Bladesworn’s offhand Pistol says it couldn’t fit in with a core warriors kit. And obviously the gunsabre would be Bladesworn exclusive, it is literally the profession mechanic… it isn’t an actual weapon, but rather a weapon kit ability.

Kneel isn’t a profession mechanic, it is literally skill 5 on the Deadeyes Rifle… the weapon would function the same across all thief specs… the Deadeye’s profession mechanic is Stealth Attack. The actual abilities of Deadeye’s Rifle are perfectly in line with a standard thief as well.

other elite spec weapons you didn’t mention…

Soulbeast Dagger is just a mainhand extension of Ranger’s Offhand Dagger.

Weaver Sword, Tempest Warhorn, and Catalyst Hammer are literally just Elementalist versions of these weapons… if you knew nothing about the elite specs you wouldn’t even think these weren’t just made for elementalist.

Mirage Axe is inspired by Mesmer Sword.

Virtuoso Dagger poses the most trouble out of any elite spec weapon simply because skill2 stocks a blade… to be made compatible with core Mesmer it would need to summon a clone instead… but since clones just auto attack with the weapon they were created with that is easily do able.

Firebrand Axe & Dragonhunter Longbow fit with core guardian just fine… they don’t do anything special that any other guardian weapon couldn’t do.

Willbender offhand Sword is simply an extension of Guardian mainhand Sword.

Vindicator Greatsword and Herald Shield are just like Any other Revenant weapons.

Reaper Greatsword, Scourge Torch, and Harbinger offhand Pistol are still just Necromancer weapons… yet again nothing about any of them says they should only work for their respective elite specs.

Scrapper Hammer is perfectly in theme with core engineer.

Spellbreaker Daggers despite the specialization theme these weapons are very mundane and act just like any other warrior weapon… the higher attack speed just make them more viable for interrupting foes and harassing spellcasters, something a warrior can’t do as effectively with other weapons…

Agreed with all of this really.

Holosmith would really just work the same as if you had Holosmith equip but and had no heat level. No damage bonus  but otherwise no great loss.

Without the E-spec your not going to have access to trait bonuses so there will be a trade-off but there will be always be always be other trait lines to help offset this.

I'm assuming they're adjusting stealth for this spec...because I want to believe they're smart enough to realize stealth can and will cause problems otherwise

Stealth generally needs an a tweak but I don't think it's as bad as people make out.

Stealth in itself isn't a problem even if you could perma-stealth.

The main problem is that it breaks targeting so even if somebody only stealth for a second you have to mess about trying to target them again and when your in a team fight that gets even more annoying each time they do it. They should let you keep your target lock to avoid this.

The other issues is more the stealth-spike-stealth spammers and that just needs Revealed to last longer.  Revealed Training and Flickering Shadows traits would need to be balanced too but it would still make them more viable.

These days it seams it's more the Rangers who are annoying with stealth then anything anyway.

  4. I'm actually loving the look of this.

Barrier, Support, Crowd control and vibes of GW1 Assassin spells.

I just hope it's not like Catalyst where you need to build up power for 2 minutes to get 3 seconds of profession mechanic by which point the fight is over anyway.

  5. Acrobatics is a great survivability line.
It is overshadowed to some degree by Daredevil now as their is alot of cross over but Acrobatics does have it's advantages.

The ability to gain swiftness on dodging is a HUGE aid to mobility.

The boosts to vigor can be nice but does balance against the extra evade bar of Daredevil

If you take Vigorous Recovery and a low recharge heal you can get some major vigor uptime

Plenty of other survivability traits too.

I think it just doesn't get the love it deserves because there is no good DPS boosters but it works well for Condi builds, especially with Deadly Arts and Trickery.

Try it with a bow for even more mobility with AOE poison and bleeding and being able to evade without going out of attack range.

Throw in Sword/Dagger as your other set with Swindlers Equilibrium for spamable boons and poison on steel.

I never really played Necro, but how good bad are their Minions  ?

They're okay. People still use one or 2 of them in PVP occasionally.

They don't give big DPS or anything major but they can act as a meat shield and help keep you alive a bit more.

They're good in PVE for being something you can just summon and leave there without having to keep pressing buttons if your looking for a more relaxed playstyle.

Were you not around when the original scrapper and their minion-gyros were a thing? The pathing was so terrible, using them felt aweful.

That's why I am personally not a fan of the idea. First our turrets got nerfed into nothingness, then we got gyros which were absolutely dysfunctional.... I don't trust anet to code minions anymore.

I wasn't, I didn't use scrapper until they changed them to wells but I can tell they were a very bad idea, especially with the fuel limits.

I would hope for more of something along the lines of Ranger Pets which work well enough for what that are meant to be.
Elementalist's Elementals work well with being ranged and not needing fast routing.

Necro minions and Mesmer clones work as meat shields but I don't see Engineers really wanting that.

I don't just want a clone of ranger pets but a single golem as pet that sensibly links in with the other Engineer traits and more of an AOE focus could give Engineers something new that other classes don't have.
They don't have to be something that can zip to the enemy and do fast spike damage to be useful.

It just seems really boring and uncreative to use a transformation mechanic 2 times in a row for our elite specs. For necromancer, I get it, since the class is designed with transformations as the core mechanic (death shroud).

But we are not tied to transformations because of our core class mechanic. So I hope they come up with something actually new instead of "this is holosmith again, but with some other abilities"...

I wouldn't mind seeing this but I do agree with 2 times in a row and this only being the 3rd specialisation.

I don't really get the hate pets get myself so I'm hoping for a pet like Golem. If they throw in a F5 to climb inside I would be even happier though.

.... so basically you want a second holosmith?

If they went another direction with it, it could work.

Holosmith is fast glass cannon with a time limit.

Golem mode could slow, tanky and was throwing out so sustained AOE conditions (ideally including poison and burning) or AOE buffs and heals (could make for good trait choices)

It could even end up as a reverse Holo with high DPS builds outside Golem mode to spikes and then retreating back got Golem mode for protection.

Slow tanky gameplay could work well if Turrets too if they ever get round to fixing them.

I'm personally hoping for "kits" that instead of replacing your weapons skills replace your tool belt uses while the skill is active

That could be fun as long as there is a focus on shorter recharge skills, there would be some synergy with Tools traits line, especially the minors. The downside would be for the skills where the toolbelt skill is the reason to take them rather then the main skill.

A mostly stationary summon that you can reposition, and its position is important for skills you can cast through it.

Given that we have turrets already (which really do need some love) I would doubt they would go the minion route, especially static minions.. I do like the idea of something with positioning that could have ranged attacks or AOE things going on though (AOE Revealed could be interesting if balanced right)

A single pet golem and some equivalent to Ranger Command skills that affect both you and the golem could be fun.

Swapping F5 you climb inside in a hybrid of Soulbeast merge and a kit could be another option, especially if there was a DPS/Defence trade off with this.

There are other ways a 'pet' could be used too that could sidestep a lot of the typical issues with ranger pets like just having ranged attacks or making it fly (but Gyro's so I doubt it)

  12. Them: Thief has to play the set way we say, keep decapping all over the map, +1, don't get into duals

Also them: Thieves shouldn't be able to use stealth

On the other hand, it does mess with peoples expectations when you win duals against professions they think you shouldn't be able to.

Magic weapons do offer a bit more range of possibilities, though.

This the the reason I'm actually glad it's Sceptre.

Pistol is the only main hand ranged weapon we have right now and range is very very useful.

If Sceptre/Pistol 3 skill offers some evade and maybe something defensive or AOE blind on 2 it could make for a good option for survivability.

This would fit with a support Spec too.

  14. This can be a fun trait but requires too much effort to collect your own bandages when you need them.

They could optimise it by giving you the healing directly if you are under max health and only drop a bandage if you don't need healing but I would still like to see the placement swapped too.

This is a problem with the weapons being locked to the elite specs… it would be better to have the new weapons fully unlocked when you completely unlock an elite spec… thus allowing use with other specs.

This seams like a good option, especially given that they could add main and offhand version of a weapon in different elite specs with different themes to give them more variety longer term.

There is defiantly professions that could do with more love when it comes to weapons then others though.

  16. Pretty much all what Panda.1967 said.

Weavers using other weapons just adds the dual attunement skill to the existing skill 3, I can't see why using a sword restricted to pure attunments would cause problems. Using Warhorn on Weaver would have no impact on skills as doesn't use slot 3 so yeah, Hammer might need something but frankly slot 3 on hammer is it's weak link anyway in an otherwise interesting weapon.

It really is Engineer that most needs some love though.

I accept no weapon swap on Holosmith, especially as they're sticking with the choice on Bladesworn. I might even accept Kits as a reason for not allowing weapon swaps but even if you are willing to give up valuable utility slots for a Kit that doesn't mean there shouldn't be more then 3 weapon combinations on core + just the 1 weapon if you choose an elite specialisation.

In general giving more choices to core professions would help reinforce the idea that elite specialisations are another way to play rather then the only way to play.

  17. See title

Example: Elementalist with Tempest and Weaver unlocked should be able to equip Sword and Warhorn regardless of if they are set as either Elite specializations or core Elementalist.

This would also mean being able to equip both Sword and Warhorn at the same time on any of these.

This would allow for more flexible usage of weapons and provide more options and variety.

This would allow allow Revenant and Mesmer to use shields for extra defence stats rather then power.

For professions like Engineer with very restricted weapon choices this would really open up the profession in a much needed way.

As this would only be a chance to equipping the weapon and you would not get access to the specializations trait lines, specialisation mechanics or utility skills it should have limited impact on balance.

It would also prevent some current annoyances like having to change specialisations just to change skin on a weapon or being left without a useable weapon equip after changing specializations.

  18. I play thief as main including PVP and i've fought against plenty of thieves too.
Fighting against thieves using stealth is annoying because you have to retarget all the time not because of the stealth itself.

It does upset some people when a thief stealth and runs rather then dying but they're then having to regen health before they can attack somebody else anyway (in alot of cases they would be better of dying and respawning anyway) and given that it does take some skill and there is DPS trade off I don't see any issue there.

Also yeah, too many people who don't want to cap and all just suicide rush mid but call out a thief for defending near and far despite them being able win duals.

There is a few really toxic people out there that need to reminded that if they don't want to play with people of your rank they should get good enough that they stop getting put in matches with you (or just block them because your not missing much)
