There was no chance involved. It was a guaranteed item until it suddenly was not.

Reasons some people would not have opened the chests is because chests with said potions had other items that also took space. So people got "punished" for being efficient with their hoarding and had no warning. If they just changed chests no one would have felt cheated losing rewards they played for, now it's not even an equal punishment across the board. It hangs on what was completely individual preferences.

Reward track potions for PvP and WvW you have earned from doing content are gone if you kept the reward chests but didn't open them. If you opened them but didn't use the potions and kept them in inventory or bank instead, you still have them.

How to tell you play WvW without saying you play WvW. Guilds are for a lot of different uses, and having different guilds for different content is why you would want to not have one "main" or whatever. And for your "no meaningful relationships or conversation", meaningful relationships or conversations would actually be the reason some of them even exist.
