Saw this for the first time today. Escort worked fine up until getting near the last point (at the edge of the swamp) and then the NPCs disappeared and reappeared back at the tent at the beginning (they still had the escort ring around them). Couldn't talk to them and they wouldn't move, only choice was to let it fail.
