Future of Guild Wars! Should we still be playing after EoD?

Recommended Posts

Had a quick question about the future of guild wars 2. Is there any reason to play the game once you beat EoD other than for your personal entertainment?

For the first time ever I have no idea what's on the horizon. Are there going to be more living worlds? Is there going to be a Guild Wars 3? I keep thinking this game has been out for a while, and if they're going to do a new game, now would be the perfect time. If that is the case are they going to do the same thing as they did with guild wars 1, which was their Hall of Monuments (https://hom.guildwars2.com/en/#page=welcome) system? At the same time this makes me happy that something new might be on the way, but sad that all my money and hard working legendries that I invested in, might be going down the drain soon.

I guess what I am trying to say is;  I've had something to look forward to which would help contribute to a current goal for me to make to play the game, which then caused me to play the game at a rate which lead to me feeling that I had a personal quest. That quest had a reward for me at the end of it .  For example, I would hunt down achievements, or legendary, or explore the world,  which would give rewards that would make my hero stronger. Now I don't have that feeling. Once I beat EoD, I don't see that quest for myself because I don't think there is a reason to make my hero stronger.

I don't know if I put it into words good or not, but does anyone else feel this way. Should I invest more time in guild wars 2 for the new legendries? Why? When there could be a possibility that the game might just end in (x amount of time).

What are your thoughts on playing Guild Wars 2?

Honestly with the way they finished the story, it gave me an overwhelming sense of "wow, this might really be the end" and now I'm sad beyond all belief for the same reasons. I'll still try to play though, for getting more legendaries, more skins, etc., but I do agree with you in that this does seem like it could possibly be the end of GW2. I'm really hoping it's not.

This is true. But when it comes to any MMO, personal enjoyment might include making your character stronger for raids, strikes,  and upcoming content, which  has always been an endless goal for some player. Now its not endless.

Is there ever any reason to play any game except personal enjoyment? Ultimately that's all you're going to get out of it.

But if you're concerned the game is going to end soon I don't think you need to worry. Anet have already said EoD is just the end of the Elder Dragon storyline, not the entire game and they've got some updates still in development, like the Alliance system for WvW. We can safely assume there will be another Living World season starting some time after EoD, we just don't know what the storyline will be about (although there's already some theories floating around).

Don't forget EoD has only been out for 6 days and many people are still working their way through it. I've just gotten to Echovald Forest and many people in my guilds are just starting the story and/or map completion because they don't have much time to play on week days. The fact that they haven't announced even more new stuff yet is normal - most players would probably be feeling overwhelmed if they did.

Finally while the game has been out for a while (10 years in August) that doesn't mean much for an MMO. Some are over 20 years old and still going. They're designed to be played, and developed, indefinitely; not like single-player or smaller multiplayer games which get a year or two of DLC if they do well and then are dropped for the next thing. It's relatively unusual for an MMO to get a sequel, it's more likely the game will be updated, including big changes (a few have even been moved to a new engine which is a lot of work, in some cases it would probably be easier to make a new game than do that).

Having said that if you're feeling burned out and lacking a motivation to keep going there's no harm in taking a break for a while, until the next Living World season is announced or something else catches your interest or you just feel like coming back again. This also ties into my first point, that there's no reason to play unless you're enjoying it. If you're not enjoying GW2 right now there's no reason to push yourself with arbitrary goals.

This is great. Thank you for sheering your opinion. Brings me comfort.

I admit it gave me reassurance as well. After finishing the story I was a bit miserable, so much time spent with this story, now comes to a conclusion. I've always loved dragons in every fantasy setting, so I can't help but be a bit emotional about it. But I believe the devs, when they said it's not the end of GW2, and I am enjoying the slower pace for once.

I've done a few things in EoD, but still have some cool lore-related collections and the turtle to complete. I think that I will go with one of the legendaries too, just can't decide which one yet. I want to see how they turned out. Maybe I will make two at once? 🤔
