If you leave them before end, you will start the instance anew like never being in there. It's with this with all instances as much as I know. I did the HoT storystep 16 for the first time recently (I never completed the HoT story before) and had a bug which catapulted me up into the air with superspeed and shot me out of the instance area. There was no saving of my progress at all and I had to restart step 16 completely from scratch, of course including the two fights which have to be done before you get to the endfight with mordremoth where it happened. Also it was not relevant that I got kicked out of the instance by a bug, the relevant thing was that I left the instance (although not by free will) and there was no progress saved.
