Spvp does need gear.

WvW exotic gear is fine if you are a new player and devoting more resources on your first ascended is very risky.

Hopefully you did not boost your character. If you did, restart from level 1 and don't boost.

People at level 80 do a combination of following (in no specific order) :

  • fractals
  • raids
  • achievements
  • story
  • masteries
  • WvW roaming
  • WvW zerg
  • spvp
  • chose a legendary and work towards it
  • open world farming
  • map completion
  • guild missions
  • a new character
  • try out (and gear for) different builds
  • dungeons
  • join a guild
  • "play" the trading post
  • get their first ascended set

In general all of these activities are more fun with more people you know. Joining a guild is highly advised.

There is no stratifoward path to gearing here as you might used to be in WoW or other MMOs. This game relies a lot more on an individual to set their own goals and path to achieve them.

Unfortunate, but very easily done, typo. That should be 'Spvp does not need gear'.

Any character, even a brand new level 1, will be level 80 with all available skills unlocked and exotic armour and weapons in PvP maps. You need something in each slot (so if you wanted to use a brand new level 1 character you'd have to buy/craft armour for the slots they have empty at the start) but it could be white level 1 gear and the stats don't matter because those are determined by your PvP build, which you select from a menu at the top of the screen in the PvP lobby.

In general I would never recommend boosting one of the first few characters. You are depriving yourself of bonding with your character and gradually getting to know the skills and traits. (also realize mesmer =/= elementalist)

That said, if you do boost a class, you will need quite some time to both understand and get to know the class as well as get its elite specialisations done (in case of mesmer: chrono and mirage. Elementalist: tempest and weaver).

A first step to start on would be to get a build working you enjoy, then both get hero points, gear and experience playing that build.

Spvp does not require any level or gear (everything is normalized and unlocked). It's a good place to get to know classes and how they behave without investing either a level 80-boost, leveling them to 80 or a lot of resources gearing them.

Edit: please notice the typo earlier. Spvp does NOT need gear obviously.

Yes, my bad. Absolute typo. Darn you cellphone.
