Thief right side "things"

So I have this thief, and it has Thousand Needles and Seal Area that I can "cast." So I read the description on them and to me it sounds like rather a trap of sorts. However, I "set" them and they do appear on the ground. However, enemies walking over them have no damage taken. I was rather expecting them to react similar to the necromancer's cold/poison thing, but they don't. So how are they properly implemented?
