  1. Most markers have an arrow, story markers in HoT where I am don't. that's the issue. If you want to, could you share what story step you are on or area you are in? I just tested with an alt in HoT that several story markers in VB do show the elevation marker. If one is not doing this it could be a bug, although reporting a bug from 5-6 years ago likely won't get fixed, but still, I'd be interested to know. It's in Tangled Depths, I remembered that after someone mentioned it, I can't remember the actual step of the quest I'll look and post it next time I log in.
  2. Top-right, but yes.In my experience it's also simply transparent if it is on a different height. Have they added that recently? I can't imagine how someone could not see that, so I'm assuming it wasn't like that when HoT was released? If so, I can understand the "tedious" critique a lot more.To be fair the HPs and other map completion locations are hidden and require exploration and are sometimes really unintuitive to find (looking at one particular HP in Tangled Depths), but in all honesty, the story markers are close to impossible to miss. The "getting side tracked" part is probably why it didn't feel like a grind to me.One might say having to unlock some masteries for the story is designed to needlessly lengthen the playthrough, but I find that hard to justify given how fast you unlock the ones that are required for the story. It is however designed to give you a reason to explore the areas. If you just want to play through the story in one go, I can understand how that can disrupt your playstyle, but that also applies to the base game in the same way. Tangled Depths is where I gave up HoT I am pretty sure, paths going this way and that way and crossing over and under with Veteran mobs at ever turn and yes the quest marker I was looking for didn't have an elevation and I was literally (based on the map) standing on it at various levels and couldn't find it. I've found every other quest marker, so it's not like I don't understand how it works it's simply the devs wanting the elevation situation to be the big part of the game (I tried updrafts, falling down, climbing up, springing higher etc etc etc). Again some love this, I simply don't.
  3. If you said Core game is casual I'd give it to you, saying the expansions are is simply being either elitist or naïve. Based on the replied on this and other posts many say once you get to HoT you need to make sure your build is good, your gear is squared away and you use tactics properly. To me if you need specific builds for an expansion to be mostly viable that's not casual. If you can't get to and solo the solo side of the game because group encounters are in the way it's not casual. I'm not saying it's the most difficult game ever, but core is casual, expansions aren't IMO.
  4. I said at the beginning that I understand it's a love or hate situation, and many love it. I don't fault them, some like chocolate ice cream some like vanilla.
  5. Most markers have an arrow, story markers in HoT where I am don't. that's the issue. We can sugar coat it and call it creative development, it's still lazy. Getting smoked coming out of or going into a solo story by Champions, Vets and tons of event mobs when no one is clearing them isn't appealing to me, as I said one man's opinion. Being stopped from doing the solo part of the game because of the group part that isn't being done isn't fun to me, you like it and that's great for you and others that think it's fun sitting there not advancing the story and everything being locked behind it. And therein like the quandary, "story mode will allow you to progress with the most basic.." but I am blocked from getting to the story very often in HoT.
  6. Again it's not a challenge, putting events meant to be done by a group directly on story markers isn't a challenge it's horrible developing. Making us guess if a quest for the story is 15,000' up or down isn't a challenge it's silly because the people sending me there would tell me generally if it's above or under ground. Again it's lazy developing designed to waste time to make an expansion seem longer. I got HoT and PoF when I purchased the game, based on HoT I wouldn't dare waste money on Living world maybe PoF changes my mind, but to solo player side (ie story line part) in HoT got to be where I didn't want to login because I simply couldn't even find where I was supposed to go in the storyline (I'd see the marker, be right on it but no where in sight, clearly it's lower, so work to get lower, nope.. higher.. nope must not of been low enough or high enough even made sure to look to see if it said "check mail"). That isn't a challenge, that's just not fun.
  7. I’m fairly certain that you also said to yourself or friends “running through layers of Vets and Quest mobs/champions solo to do the story sucks” you just forgot that part.
  8. To me, and it’s one guy’s opinion, the mobs are harder they just have more health and make you dodge/cc correctly. Now their are more Vet mobs who are tougher ask the champions are tough to solo (impossible for a new player). Thing is there are SO many pack in mobs you end up running by so much or fighting for hours just to move to a quest marker for the story. Then you realize you needed to go up now down (again map doesn’t specify) so you get to do it all over and wasted that time. It’s complete garbage to me, clearly nothing more than a time sink designed by the devs. Agin not a huge challenge, but an annoyance of guessing up or down in this maze. I seem to be in the minority and I’m ok wi try that, I play for fun and running around blindly because my partners didn’t tell me if they’d be up a tree or underneath the ground seems silly to me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m talking new player solo playing to do the story here. I’ve got in groups where we ran around doing events and the area was enjoyable as were the events, but I was following someone who knew exactly where to go, what to jump over and go under when to get there. I was speaking more of a new players just wanting to do the story to unlock stuff that’s stuck behind it.
  9. See this concept of we’ve been there is useless because many Vets forget how it was back then without everything they have now to help them. It’s been said when you forget the pain the experience you speak of means nothing. That’s a very true statement.
  10. As a newer player if I’d pf started in HoT I’d be playing a different game now. HoT isn’t hard, it’s tedious, monotonous and annoying but not hard. The maze of maps, lack of being able to understand as a new player how to simply get from point A to B is annoying. I could go on and on but it’s been said before, HoT for new players is love or hate and sending there right there would be a bad idea IMO.
  11. I hear this a lot and I just don’t get it. I’m in HoT now and can’t find the quest markers because either their are champions I can’t beat standing on them, they are above or below where I am (and no designation on the map as to what one) or events in the area. Then toss in the maze of elevations and mass quantities of Veteran mobs I can’t want to leave this area. Actually going to PoF now because I dislike this annoying maze so much I may never go back. I’d like to understand why people love it and ask if they love it while flying around it or running around? ?
  12. I disagree with this. HoT would be a nightmare without mounts. Honestly it’s a nightmare without flying. Veteran mobs at every turn, quest markers don’t say up or down do you are left guessing are they under ground or in the trees? If you attempted to do world quests you’d be left behind the first time the group moved. Is it possible? Yes. As a new player I can say it would be miserable though. Fighting through mobs you can’t beat (seems every quest marker I have to go to has an event mob at it or a champion) is tough enough without also having to fight every ten steps to get there. This isn’t hard, it’s tedious and boring. I wouldn’t suggest anyone subject a new player to that without mounts.
  13. Problem is when new players come and don’t have Elite spec maxed, don’t have all the mounts, and have no idea what “powercreeped” specs are. IMO this is the difference in Vets saying the game isn’t hardcore vs others saying it is. When I joint a good raiding guild with support at anytime and the best gear in EQ the gamewasn’t hard at all for me. That said the game itself for 90% of the base was extremely hardcore. It was only made not that to me based on the time I’d spent in game working to end game. Clearly some people forget the experience of when they just started. Not saying you, as you said how it’s was a struggle when you first ran through say HoT.
  14. Asking the hardcore base (people that post on forums aren’t the majority and by naitire are rarely casual even if they call themselves that) what they think the difficulty is doesn’t really work well lol. Having played EQ at launch, we can probably agree it was hardcore, and most any MMO thats launched since then I’d say in today’s MMO this game is fairly hardcore for a newer player. Veteran players don’t realize that because you have everything unlocked, fly around, have a great friend base to do what you need so honestly your opinion is so far obscured it’s basically useless. A brain surgeon telling a resident removing an appendix is trivial didn’t make it so. The core game was fairly simple, easier than that honestly. HoT is a pain for new players. Constant events where your story takes you, half the time no one there to help you so you can barely get to the green marker. Veteran mobs are kind of tough and everywhere. It’s a maze on a massive scale up, down and underground so just knowing where to go is a pain. (green quest marker doesn’t say it’s up or down from current location like hero points do). Overall this isn’t casual by today’s standards at all. Just running events with crowds isn’t casual. The mechanics aren’t hard, but aren’t simple either, it’s really fast paced because 90% of the people know what they are doing and the rest us are basically along for the ride so learning exactly what to do isn’t easy playing from behind most of the time. That’s not casual, that’s like joking a boss fight in a raid without any concept of what to do. I’m not basing the game, it is what it is and I’m still playing it and like it a lot, but saying it’s causal and not hardcore by today’s standards isn’t accurate, at least to a new player.
  15. This makes sense I guess, I felt bad today because the group literally waited (even after I said I dread the jump parts) and I wish they would have just said just wait till we say so then /gg. That said I wouldn't have understood what I was missing, which seems like not much, and felt awkward anyway I guess. lol Side note I did the fractal today because the guild I joined invited me, I'd never done anything but storyline, events, hearts and gathering/crafting so I knew I had a lot of the game left to see and figured I'd branch out since they offered to keep me alive (I'm not level 80, they all were). So I'm not sure I'd ever do hundreds of them. lol
  16. I appreciate this, but I would feel very awkward just staying back when with a group and then doing /gg to catch up. It feels like the devs want us jumping around (Jump around, jump up, jump up and get down.. ) and others have now told me "You do realize that JUMPING puzzles are one of the things they put into the spotlights when launching the game. Not only that they have introduced bigger and harder (way harder) jumping puzzles over time" which is not what I wanted to hear but seems very honest.
  17. I made it, after falling several times, yes. Based on my history in video games I don't think I'll just suddenly figure it out and more so it's simply not fun. When we were running and I had to do little jumps on a board walk I hated it. The area with the fire and the jumps from the pillars was worse and it was then I questioned playing because I had a feeling it was going to get worse farther into the game, based on what I am reading I am probably right. That's for the information.
  18. I don't mean jumping up, I mean jumping across gaps. Same thing really. If you don't want to do it, you don't really have to, there's no fighting going on in theese parts, and there's rarely a mechanic on the jumpy part that requires a party. So just say something like "can i please gg, i suck at jumpy parts" in chat, then /gg and wait for others to finish getting to the next checkpoint. And i'm not implying you suck at it, just that, if you word it like that people are OK with it most of the time so there's a little tip for you. Besides, if you do the fractals a lot, this becomes second nature really. Only a few jumps are required after a checkpoint and those are mostly at the end bosses, but they're not exactly jumping puzzles, just separations from the checpoint to the arena. It's an easy jump. So yes, you'll still have to do some jumping, but not as much i guess...It's kind of how the game is. No you don't have to imply it, you can flat out say it I am trash at jumping in games. It's a me thing, I admit it. "Easy Jump" is opinion lol I almost missed the jump to the boss area in todays fractal.
  19. I don't mean jumping up, I mean jumping across gaps.
  20. I recently returned to GW2 after a long break and was really enjoying the game. I found a small but amazing guild and did my first Fractal/Tier1 daily (whatever it was). Sadly I hated it, not only did I not know what I was doing and it's so fast I was lost 90% of the time, I can get past that learn the mechanics and what to do more so what not to do. My thing is why so much jumping? If I wanted to play Super Mario I'd load it up and play. I asked the guild if everything is like that and they said a lot is. Is that really true? A really fun game tied to one mechanic like that simply doesn't make sense to me. Seems I am back to searching for another MMO if this is what drives GW2. /sad
  21. We don't have to be brilliant too do we? Or Posh? Because that's a bar too high for me currenty. ? I am on Anvil Rock, if that's a problem I don't know.
