The plaguedoctor-necromancer connection probably does go deeper than simply having 'plague' in the name, though. They were often viewed as psychopomps or harbingers of death, generally because, even though they were generally trying to prevent death, more often than not when they showed up, someone was going to die. There were also superstitions/conspiracy theories that they were spreading plague in order to keep themselves in business.

 

So there is a degree to which it's entered the popular subconscious as a symbol of death by disease - there are even some depictions of the Horseman Pestilence wearing the outfit, or at least the mask. Which means it kinda works for either - the engineer basis is closer to what they actually were, while the necromancer basis is closer to what some people associate them with.

Mesmer: Predicted warhorn. We're getting dagger mainhand. Predicted utility mechanic is also very different to that which was revealed.

Necromancer: Predicted mainhand sword. Looks like we're getting mainhand pistol.

 

That's 0 for 2. Yeah, I'm going ahead and calling it a fake. The "leak" did predict boats, but I'm willing to chalk that up as coincidence.

Let's be honest, that "leak" was obvious to be fake from the beginning. Like the thing they described that aegis from guardian starts to reflect 100% of the damage instead of blocking it. With how much access guardian has to aegis, this would be so busted it's ridiculous to even think about.

Yeah, my initial response was scepticism as well, but now we've got stuff to check it to, I figured it was worth verifying that it was completely off so we can safely ignore it henceforth.
