Update on instance creation failure

Hi all,

We hope you’re enjoying the launch of Path of Fire. We’ve been in the game with you this weekend, but also, tracking down and hot-fixing the launch issues that have come up. In particular we’ve been working on the connection and story instance creation problems that have been cropping up during peak hours in Europe. I’m writing to give an update on that.

We quickly identified a root problem, a network connectivity issue between a group of game servers and their character database servers, but as we reconfigured the datacenter to avoid that problem, we introduced a configuration error. Now we’ve tracked down that second error. We believe the issue is resolved, but we can’t know for sure until tomorrow’s peak hours. In the meantime, thank you for bearing with us through this, and know that we’re watching closely and ready to jump in if anything else goes wrong.

  • Thank you for your hard work! Personally I was fortunate enough to get to play right away, and never had critical problems aside from a few disconnects, infinite loading screens and a single 5-minute rollback. Some of my friends weren't able to get into the Crystal Desert at all, but we all appreciate the work you guys put in over the weekend.

  • Although I wasn't one of the unfortunate players (just a few bugs/failures), I want to express my appreciation for all the Devs' hard work.

  • Should this make the EU servers more stable as well? Because that's been pretty shakey this weekend...

  • Thank you so much ! That's what I love to hear from developers ! Hope it will last for next weekend too. The servers might be stable today, but at peak hours on weekends the issue might come back. Hope it won't be the case !

  • Thank you for your hard work. My girlfriend and I have been affected a lot by all these network errors, but we understand that launches can be unpredictable, and that your office must be pretty much on fire the last days (so that's why it was called Path of Fire after all? :D). What we've been able to see of the expansion has been absolutely amazing though <3 Thank you for keeping us updated!

    Masterpieces come with few issues. Just completed the Story and found It the most epic and excited I've ever played in a game. You did such a great job i honestly don't care about any issue i encountered. Ofc i'll still report them , should i find any, so that i can land a hand aswell. We all know you'll solve everything like u've always done for 5+ years since i got into that worms pit with my first Warrior in the Shiverpeaks in that beta testing GW2 . Keep up the great work on this Legend! ;)

  • Thank you. Does this also take care of the random disconnects, when not in a story instance, where you may have lost the last 5 minutes of progress when you log back in?

    PoF is so much better then Core GW2 and HoT, I’m enjoying this expansion a lot, You guys have all done great jobs and should be proud of yourselves.
    The story is immersive (no spoilers please as some of us, myself included, haven’t finished it yet) the Cut scenes are good. The landscapes beautiful, the funny dialogues, the mounts are smooth (ignoring a few bugs here).

    There are indeed a lot of bugs, crashes and other performance issues, some of which are blocking progress. We get fix after fix, but for some of us (or maybe for a lot, it’s hard to tell the percentage of player’s affected) it hasn’t solved a whole lot.

    However, having said that, most of us (I hope) do understand that with the launch of a new MMORPG or an expansion thereof, bugs and other issues are to be expected (perhaps not this many, but hey, kitten happens), more so then say with an FPS,TPS offline RPG or RTS game.

    We do really appreciate you guys working all weekend to try and tackle these issues, it is both frustrating for you as it is to us. I do feel like you get to much criticism and negative comments coming your way, and don’t get show enough appreciation, but I guess that’s the way things go.

  • I'd be lying if I said the connectivity/instance creation issues hadn't impacted my experience but that doesn't take one bit from what a fantastic expansion PoF is.
    When game devs say they listen to community feedback, it's usually hogwash uttered to keep customers content and in a spending mood. PoF though shows an overwhelming number of "learned lessons" from vanilla, HoT and living story, in terms of narration, story and map design and map mechanics.
    Genuinely, deeply love it.

    The problems have discouraged me from leaving Amnoon City. Which is no bad thing because it is a beautifully designed area to explore and wander in! Where I have wandered out, I enjoyed every second.
    Great job on the expac so far, hopefully the issues wont last much longer

    Logged in to test something and tried to port from the Desert Highlands to Crystal Oasis. Got disconnected while still on the map to click on the waypoint :astonished: Lets hope this doesn't happen again later today.

    Just a clarification: you know that Story Instance Creation problems are happening on U.S. servers as well, right? On Saturday I was partied with a guildie and we couldn't get into the story that goes through the portal that goes North (can't remember the name right off). Both of us tried to open the instance and got a story instance creation error. We relogged the entire game and still couldn't get in. Had to give up on the story on our main game play day.

  • The problems continued for me during the day, Yesterday trying to finish a story instance that many others did not have problems with. I know you are working hard but this seems to be widespread and not localized to EU as I live about 10 minutes from your Bellevue HQ.

    and still disconnect after disconnect already tried 5 times to complete the departing. but its ALWAYS disconnect after i kill eater of souls and palawa joko has done his speech . sick and tired of this expansion already. having to waste hours upon hours to have progressed absolutely nothing is ridiculous

  • Well the chapter "The Sacrifice" wont progress after fighting with Balthazar, tried twice to do this

  • I guess it's peak time in Europe, and the bug appears to still be present. I got d/c'd from Crystal Oasis with the dreaded 'Network Error . Please check your internet connection and try again (Code=1083:5:7:1596:101)'. Oddly 2 other people in my house seem to be fine currently.

  • Adding a +1 here. Having issues since PoF launch and now can't access anything at all due to the 1083:5:7:1596:101 Network Error issue. Shuts down the client on loading any map.

  • Thanks so much for all of you hard work and effort. Loving the expansion so far. Even with a few hiccups along the way with disconnects and bugs, I'm having a blast with the new content.

    Thanks for the effort, and I too enjoy PoF much more than HoT!

    I'm not going to thank you or anyone else until I can play for at least 30 minutes without crashing, the game is unplayble and completely broken and it it only indicates the lack of professionalism.
    I can understand the first 2 days of DCing due to server flood and rollbacks but COOOME ONNNN I play while rata sum is almost empty with maybe 5 people in it and the game still crash with the same bs message that says that my router sucks or my imaginary anti virus is kitten up the whole client or whatever.

    Starting to dobut my loyality to this game or you and I lost any desire to play PoF I'm starting to give up.
    This is disgraceful and unacceptable and I'm saying this as your customer who spent more than 2k dollars into supporting you over the years.
    Seriously if you can't fix the problems hire people who can because it appears the game become more and more broken on each update.

    I got disconnected yesterday when I was about to fight Balty. I don't think it has anything to do with the instance creation error, though.

    I have to agree that something seems to be getting worse and worse. When I started GW2 at beta I was one of the people who never had any problems. With HoT there were rollbacks and I started getting DCs, and now in PoF it is DCs AND the instance creation errors.

  • Just wanted to say whats already been said, great game by an amazing and dedicated dev team. Loving every second of the expansion so far great work guys know that most of appreciate it . One thing im still amazed at is how no matter what happens bug fixes or any update even expansions the servers dont go down its very welcome and awesome to see so much innovation in all the right places.

    We paid for this expansion. Just because other games have similar or worse problems doesn't make it OK. If you get a cockroach in your restaurant salad would you like someone to say "Don't complain, at least it wasn't a dead mouse like someone got at this other restaurant!"? No, it would still be terrible and worth complaining about.

    Don't bother trying to shove that example in people's face they don't care in their mind they truly believe its "ok" but its not if you paid for this.
    When you buy a product you expect it to work properly, However since this is a video game and MMO yes we can understand if the first 2 days the server will crash and you will get disconnected but on each update the game become worse with more bugs and issues.
    We were also getting stupid bugs on the first instances we couldn't start missions or complete missions and these bugs also casued issues in the server farm of EU or whatever.

    I have one question to Areanet. Do you have a QA department in your company? Seems like they're doing a terrible job.
    Also what was the point of the stress event a few weeks ago?

    We have every right to be angry about this so stop punching us with the "Its MMO dude chillout" kitten because you're wrong we paid for a product we want it to work. and if its a video game it should at least work 90% of the time not 3.12121212%.
