How to use bold italic in Markdown?

How can I mark a text as bold and italic in Markdown?The tutorial says, I have to use 3 × *** or 3 × ___. But the text only apears as italic, if clasped with three of them.If I use * and after some characters **, too, the text apears as bold italic

There are cases where it won't parse correctly and thus not give you the expected result. In those situations, you can use standard html instead. For basic italic and bold text, it needs to be that order. _**example**_ or <i><b>example</b></i>

Well, it seems to work out now. Many thanks. I probably always did it the other way—or used the same characters. But it is no a typical Markdown, is it? Or why do I have to use different characters for bold italic??
