How to control the Beetle Mount?

I never quite understood the Beetle Mount controls. Because sometimes the drift will only drift slightly but other times it will drift wildly with no turning directions and just sliding in the straight line causing me to miss a turn or something. Can somebody explain the controls for me?

Drifting doesn't make you turn, it does the opposite and makes you continue in a straight line while rotating, and then will take off in a new direction that you're facing when you let go of the button. Its very difficult to master and prone to lag spikes.

while turboing, I did some testing. Turning while tapping the drift key, vs turning while holding the drafting key, I notice that both methods the mount still wont really turn until the flames turn blue from red.

It really helps for me, personally, to be zoomed out more when using the beetle so I can switch direction faster and bump into fewer obstacles.
