"Actually, it's not as disingenuous as you think. Why is it unreasonable for people to spend money on a hobby?"
Actually, ~300 gold an hour at current exchange rates comes out to between $16-$17 an hour which is nowhere near minimum wage for the USA.  Maybe a full time manufacturing job (But that's also still before taxes).   This is why it's disingenuous to say "But jobs are the most gold an hour!"  Also spending all your money on a single game is a bit unreasonable when there are multiple games coming out that these players would want to play. (Unless they're whales, but those are rare).

"If people want to regard game content like a job that's just there to earn something, why is this comparison invalid? "

"Work" has multiple meanings, and where it's being used, it can be swapped out with "effort" and mean the same thing.  Games are also an entertainment medium.  Players play content because it's fun or because it gives a good reward (And good games can make content both fun and rewarding). Players putting in work/effort to gain rewards from a medium of entertainment isn't actually work for anything actually real or important while working at a job is to sustain their existence. So no, comparing Real-Life work (Person putting in work/effort to pay for Real-Life necessities) to in-game effort for rewards is non sequitur.  It does not follow the same logic.  You don't have to do anything in-game to have fun in it, while at work, you're expected to do certain tasks to get payment.

And this is coming from someone who, while they had a job, would pay for things in the gemstore, but at the same time, it wasn't all of my spare cash at any given time.

You don't buy gems and convert to gold. You buy alt accounts when the expacs are on sale, then just login daily on each account. Throw the loot/gold into a personal guild bank to collect on your main once per month.

Various well known streamers all do that. Teapot gets like 4.5k/month just from login rewards if I remember the video specifically, but that was from 47 accounts.

Do you go to WvW, press a button and get a free Exotic set or do you need to invest resources(like time) to get it?

Going to split hairs then? It cost no liquid wealth at all to get stat selectable exotic gear. Hop into a borderland and kill a door guard/vet warg every five minutes. Bonus points, you can get almost all the requisite mats/currencies for legendary armor that way in 22 weeks if you can stand the boredom.

You said WvW gives free Exotic gear, playing WvW for hours just for a single armor piece doesn't sound very interesting. Sure, it's a good bonus when you go for GoB or something else, but specifically for Exotic gear?

Free is still free mate. WvW loves to throw exotic gear at you from the reward tracks and skirmish track. You also periodically get free ascended armor, weapons, and rings. Half of my ascended weaponry all came from WvW.

Fractals and Raids also have a chance to give free gear, so people shouldn't be saying that you need investment into Fractals/Raids then?

FotM doesn't provide sufficient free fear to play above Tier 2 without playing with infusions that have a cost of over 10k gold on the grey market.

Okay, so, let's do some quick maths.  First some limitations; since you're not playing these alt accounts longer than logging in and getting the stuff, there's no reason to select anything but the +20 laurels from the chest of loyalty.

Laurels, as of this post, are worth 60s 34c a piece ;You get 55 laurels in 28 days.  This is 33g 18s 70c
Mystic Coins, as of this post, are 99s 36c each (Post 15% TP tax assuming sold at 1g 16s 89c each); You get 20 mystic coins in 28 days.  This is 19g 87s 20c

In total, this is 53g 5s 90c per 28 day cycle per account (As of this post, prices fluctuate)

Now, I don't have dozens of accounts, but from what I've been told, logging onto about 30 accounts takes about a good portion of a half an hour per day.  Sorting the loot from one into a guild bank takes another hour for all the accounts.  For 15 hours worth of "Work" across 30 accounts you'll get 1,591g 77s Or 5478 gems ($68.47) which is $4.56 an hour.  This is $2.69 below minimum wage and, now-a-days, you'd be hard pressed to find a job that doesn't pay you at least $10 an hour.  It's still the highest gold per hour, however, and a better return on your overall investment in cash if you can manage to find accounts under a certain cost threshold (Which is less than $5 per account)  At current rates, $15 = 1,200 gems which is 239g 16s, or 186g 10s 10c more than what you'd g et in 28 days with one account bought on a 50% sale and you get the money now instead of having to wait 28 days.

Depends on what method you use to login with tbh. That and you would not do any sorting until the end of the month, which frankly is easier to just sell it all on the TP and deposit the gold into the guild bank for transfer once it sells.

You're also forgetting that gems can only be converted once, whereas once those alt accounts are purchased they continue to provide in game gold merely for logging in, so the true return on that purchase extends far beyond one month.

500g weekly limit will be hit very fast if you liquidate it all and then deposit into the guild bank.

You're ignoring the point of that post.   $15 gets you the equivalent of ~5 months worth of one alt account multi-logging profit right away.   It's far easier and far more manageable to drop $60 on gems and skip having to wait months to start getting the gold you want than to have to wait 5 months and also juggle 4 accounts to get the money you're after.
