Why is food more expensive to craft than buy?

Recommended Posts

I'm not even thinking about the trash people craft while on their way to level the profession, I mean actual meta foods that are used by pretty much every build out there, so you'd expect them to have a higher demand than supply.

I looked into crafting my own food, but it makes no sense to do it myself, because usually I'd save 4-5s on a single craft if I bought it directly than if I crafted it myself.

So, how and why does this work? I know there's nothing that drops these food items.

Can you give an example which foods you mean exactly? I just looked at the tradeable foods and utilities the PvE-Meta-build use for the different guard-builds (just as an example), and all are cheaper to craft?

Pretty much all the top power/ferocity foods, the endurance foods + their alternatives. You can buy 'canned' account-bound versions in WvW, but that's about it.

Okay, let's see:

Power/Ferocity:

Bowl of Sweet and Spicy Butternut Squash Soup - cheaper to craft

https://gw2efficiency.com/crafting/calculator/a~0!b~1!c~0!d~10-41569

Plate of Spicy Moa Wings - cheaper to craft

https://gw2efficiency.com/crafting/calculator/a~0!b~1!c~0!d~5-91917

Endurance Reg.:

Bowl of Orrian Truffle and Meat Stew - cheaper to craft

https://gw2efficiency.com/crafting/calculator/a~0!b~1!c~0!d~10-12488

I don't see a problem here, have you considered the red warning-text gw2efficiency shows?

Yeah, guess I was just looking for low quantities instead of how much it'd cost to produce 100.

There are food items that got a recipe ... which also dropped directly. Of course the direct drops made the tp price ... drop as well. 😄 In some cases lower than the crafting cost. Namely some festive food items which they removed from bags. (Where people then complained. Could have been because of the research notes but I guess they also wanted people to craft it ... to not have the recipes being useless.)

In this case it is because the recipes uses ingredients from vendors that are only available as bundles which means you end up buying something like 10 of an ingredient even if you only need 1. The cost calculator uses the cost of 10 even if you are making just 1 which will inflate the resulting price.
