Even if we were to completely forget that the world of Guild Wars 2 is a continuation of the world of Guild Wars as you appear to be proposing:

First, from a philosophical perspective, just because you're looking to do things that are different, doesn't mean that everything has to "subvert expectations" and you shouldn't cater to the more general expectations at all.

Second, and more importantly, go into the character creation process and select elementalist as your profession. What does it say down at the bottom:

Favors Ranged . Elemental Magic . Versatile Caster

Except in practice, every elite spec has been a Favors Melee elite spec, an elementalist is not a profession where you'd realistically want to go into endgame or competitive content as core.

So one of the first things that the game tells anyone even considering playing elementalist is a lie. It's promising, well, "wizzard" as you put it. And then it delivers "magic warrior" instead.

Now, don't get me wrong, I like magic warrior, and I'm glad it's an option, but before they end elite specialisations they should cater to Favors Ranged as well. Doesn't need to be a classic wizard, sorcerer, conjurer, or whatever. Could be an arcane archer, a gunmage, a thrower of maces imbued with elemental energy, or whatever. But there has to be something where it actually feels the specialisation was designed for Favors Ranged over Favors Melee.
