Help to find mini instance

Hello all 

So over a year ago a friend and I started playing gw2 , we played until we reached about level 40ish and where really enjoying levelling but  had to stop playing.

We have just come back and picked up where we left off. We are again really enjoying ourselves but are a little bit confused.

We’re enjoying doing the map exploration, heart quests , dynamic quests a few world bosses and dungeons, but we would really like to find some more group content that is relevant at our level and there’s something i remember from before that we can’t seem to find now. 

When levelling from 0 to 40 last year we stumbled across some content in open world that we don’t see to be able to find anything like again .

so while walking around in open world ( unfortunately I don’t remember where) we came across a portal with a lot of players attacking it. When the portal was broken everyone ran in and we all entered an instanced area with a boss fight with some nice mechanics .

After the boss was killed everyone was just back in open world and went off .

i really don’t know what this mini instants was or how to find something like it again? 
could anyone explain what this was? And if theee are  other similar events we can find ? 
any other tips on fun stuff to find while levelling up would be greatly appreciated as well.

I believe you encountered one of the old rift events. There are several mini dungeons in the game, many are just basic, but a few do have mechanics. There are Rift and Invasion Events. There are also world bosses and meta events. All of these are slightly harder. Then there are dungeons which start at level 30, but are usually designed for 5 man groups.  There's a dungeon every 5 levels all the way from 30 to 80. But these days it's so fast to get to 80 it doesn't matter that much, because that's when the game really begins.

That sounds like the branded rifts, part of one of the side stories from Season 4. They occur every 10 minutes in specific locations around the world. You can see more info here: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Catch_Brand_crystals_and_use_them_to_disrupt_the_rift

There aren't as many people doing them now they've been out for a while, but they'll still get groups sometimes and you can always call it out in map chat and in the LFG tool to get more people to join.

We will probably go and do some again just for fun ( if we find anyone else to do them with , but are these rifts still worth doing? For any other reason than for fun ? 
Is there anything you would recommend doing while we are levelling? 
we have tried some wvw which we love, but a bit out of our depth.

also would like to find a nice guild but don’t know where to start. options on our server seem a bit limited but we could move server.

we would like to find something fairly casual, but that do actually play regularly. 
Dose anyone have any suggestions for an English speaking server with some good guilds ?

Guilds only matters for wvw and eu or na server clusters so you dont have to move because of that.
