Steam : No video with Linux since 3 days

Recommended Posts

Since 3 days my GW2 on Steam isn't working properly. I can start the game, hear sound but there is no video output. Other games work without problems. Also gaming without Steam like BG3 from GOG work properly. For test purposes I installed some GE-Protion8 versions but this didn't change anything. Someone else with the same problem here?

What is the deal with the pixman package?

There was a bit of a bug with it having debug code enabled, though that is on version 0.43.0 and has now been fixed. Basically it made the launcher freeze the entire system, its not your issue here.

As for your issue i take it the launcher works normally and once you hit play the game appears to start but you get no picture. Does the game window show at all?

Did you reboot? (Just putting it here if you haven't tried it)

Try hitting alt+enter to toggle fullscreen when its running and see if anything happens.

Did anything get updated right before the issue started happening?

Nearly every time I start Steam GW2 seems to be updated. I also already tried ALT + ENTER but this isn't changing anything. I hear the sound of the game but don't see anything. This is weird because other games work without problems. I looked in the log folder of steam, there is a lot of log files inside, which of them could contain any useful information.

Is this pixman package part of steam, of Proton or of my Nobara?

I also competely reinstalled GW2, but this also didn't change anything.

Pixman is a linux package, its used for 2d stuff. So its in nobara in your case. But its not the problem as if it was the same issue that it caused you wouldn't get into the game at all. Then you get the launcher, it says "initializing" and once past that everything just completely locks up.

As for getting a log: In steam, go to the properties of gw2 and put "PROTON_LOG=1 %command%" into the launch options without the quotation marks. This will then make proton spit out a log into your home folder when you launch the game. You may also want to go into the compatibility tab and swap the to Proton 8.0-5 just to see if that works.

There is a log file in my /home named steam-1284210.log, this is quite huge.

When I switch to Proton8.0-5, I see messages like

wine:38455): GStreamer-WARNING **: 22:46:19.686: Failed to load plugin '/home/th3o/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Proton 8.0/dist/lib64/gstreamer-1.0/libgstisomp4.so': /home/th3o/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Proton 8.0/dist/lib64/gstreamer-1.0/libgstisomp4.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64

in the console where I started steam from.

Yep, try checking the timecodes when the game opens as that's where the errors should start appearing. The gtreamer stuff could be causing it and that is, in this case, part of steam itself, you can try verifying the "game files" of proton 8 in steam and see it that helps.

Another thing to try could be to install the flatpak version of steam and see if that works.

The reason is mangohud, it causes the problems with GW2. It was globally activated inside Goverlay and also passed as command argument inside steam. I turned off this global enabled inside Goverlay and also removed mangohud %command% and voilla GW2 runs again.

Something must have been changed inside GW2 as it worked flawless some days ago.

Thanks to all who tried to help me :)
