Ryzen 5 2600 to 3600 or 5600x?

Hello everyone.

I have a r5 2600 coupled with a rtx 2060 super. I have some huge fps drop while raiding and i think it's because of my cpu.

I wanna upgrade it, i have a b450 motherboard and i wonder if the 3600 would be enough to have 60 fps smooth in 1080p?

I don't want more fps i just want to play smoothly in raid, do you think the 3600 is an enough choice? (I dont do pvp or mcm)

Thanks

You shouldn't have huge framedrops in instanced content.
Are you using shadows/reflections? Those are CPU bound. Normally model limit would be turned down as well in metas and WvW.

I would try d9d12pxy or dxvk before swapping CPU if it's just for raids.

    Thanks for the respond.

I should have given more information. I use d912pxy, i use no shadow and no reflect. model limit are at the lowest and i still have huge fps drop on boss like sabetha. like drop to 40 fps.

In fractal it's smooth but depend again on which boss i'm on.

I read some people have better fps with the 3600 but is it really worth it?

It is worth it to get the Ryzen 5 5600X because it has top tier instructions per cycle and has a 8 core CCX. Not so sure on the Ryzen 5 3600 since the IPC improvement isn't as large an IPC improvement over 2nd gen Ryzen.

Rtx 2060 Super is roughly a RTX 2070 or RX 5700XT but due to Nvidia driver's multithreading the driver matters more than GPU tier

    • Cyberpunk 2077 on 1080p medium , 1% min FPS from R5 2600X to R5 3600X is +2 for RX 5700XT, +8 for RTX 3070
    • Rainbow Six Siege 1080p ultra, +1FPS for RX 5700XT and +64FPS for RTX 3070
    • Horizon Zero Dawn 1080p ultra, +5FPS for RX 5700XT and +8FPS for RTX 3070
    • Rise of the Tomb Raider 1080p highest setting , +2FPS for RX 5700XT and +14FPS for RTX 3070
    • Watch Dogs Legion 1080p ultra , +0FPS for RX 5700XT and +10FPS for RTX 3070
    • Assassin's Creed Valhalla 1080p ultra, +0FPS for RX 5700XT and +5FPS for RTX 3070

    Geometric mean : +14% roughly using RTX 3070 for Ryzen 5 2600X to Ryzen 5 3600X, ~+24% from Ryzen 5 2600X to Ryzen 5 5600X

Testing with a latest generation GPU like the RTX 3090 does help to highlight just how far AMD has come with Ryzen in a few years. Zen+ which is only a refined version of Zen, provides on average a 14% boost in gaming performance when CPU limited. Then from Zen+ to Zen 2 we see a larger 17% uptick and the most recent update (Zen 3) provided a further 23% performance uplift.

Thanks a lot for the specific input.

I think i'll wait a bit for the ryzen 5 5600 not the x one i read it gonna be release soon.

Thanks a lot for the explanation

None of those games are GW2, though, and GW2's specific quirks may limit it from showing similar improvements.
To OP: Have you tried D912PXY? It boosted my framerates quite a bit with a 7700K/1080Ti. https://github.com/megai2/d912pxy/wiki/Installing

That comment isn't very helpful because IPC is IPC, it doesn't matter if the game is GPU or GPU bound. If it was GPU bound then running a lower resolution would show the minor differences , but GW2 is CPU-bound. The major limitation on prior Zen chips is the 4 core CCX , which can be completely worked around with proper core affinity. GW2 was designed with monolithic Intel chips in mind.

So I was lucky and got a 5600X on launch. Upgraded from a 2600X. The difference is quite massive although I didn't carry out any sort of scientific testing so take everything I say with a grain of salt (also upgraded RAM from 3000MHz to 3600MHz and my GTX 1080 to a 3080 so YMMV). I play in 4k with the dx12 mod with optimised settings and low character model limit and got about 40-50 fps over my previous system in mistlock observatory which should give you an idea of the difference. So I went from a relatively stable 60fps to about 100 fps. Utilization is still garbage as now neither my GPU nor my CPU ever see utilization over ~80%.

5600x user here, on 3440x1440 with character setting to medium, hovers around 35-45 fps in crowded scenerio.

Dx12 plugin don't seem to make noticeable difference here, so it's generally smooth as long as you don't expect miracles.
