Before a mod locks this obvious troll post, I really don't understand this take.

If people are against something and unhappy, that means the devs are doing something wrong, not the people are doing something wrong for being unhappy.

We are in the minority using these forums, which means you already must love the game to be here. Which means you want the game to succeed. Which means if you see the game taking a path where it doesn't succeed when it could be doing so quite easily then you say something.

They didn't even remember about legendary runes before the post and only after it was pointed it quickly threw something out there to try to calm people. They are too focused on their own changes to the game instead of actually improving said game. GW2 didn't even need anything past IBS and it would have more people playing it today, especially if IBS was done right and they took their time with it. GW2 would be a better game for it. If EoD was only released later this year for example, there would be more people and they would be earning more money. Especially as it would give them the time to actually balance classes for once and give us something for pvp and wvw players instead of promising wvw alliances soon to end 2 years ago.
That's why people speak out, its because we know how easilly this game could be improved or better. And yet they keep choosing the path that makes it worse.

"If people are against something and unhappy, that means the devs are doing something wrong, not the people are doing something wrong for being unhappy."

Actually, nobody is doing anything wrong in this case. While players are absolutely allowed to be unhappy and upset with this expac, not all players feel that way. And if the devs doing something wrong is directly related to how players feel, well then surely they're doing something right also if some players also feel excited about these changes. But all in all, even if most players were upset about these changes, why does that have to mean the devs are doing something wrong? I'm sure the devs work hard to do the best job they can, and they dont work to deliberately make players upset, but your immediate reaction to something subjective you dont like is that it must be the fault of the creator - got it.

The rest of your post is just opinion. You have no idea or data to suggest GW2 would have been better one way or the other, or if there would have been more players otherwise.

And finally, I can never take any criticism from a common player seriously when they suggest that they know how easily a game "could be improved or better". Everything that exists can be improved or better - what are you doing about it if you're just complaining without any direct involvement. You're not working on the game in any intimate way, like a dev, to know exactly how the game can be improved or better. You dont know anything about the scope or the limitations. You dont know anything about the player data they collect that affects their decisions. All you have is your frustrations and opinions about subjective experiences that dont please you specifically - which is all any of us have; happy or upset. But, this game isnt made specifically for you, or specifically for anyone else. So, for you specifically - the game is getting worse, and you're likely not alone. For me specifically, I believe these changes make the game better, and the game has only gotten better since I started playing in beta - I'm likely not alone either.

That said, not a single player here on the forum has any clue what to expect beyond what information they have chosen to give us - which I'm sure mostly lacks the finer details, AND overreacting negatively to something you havent even experienced yet that is a subjective experience knowingly trying to but, not meant to specifically please or disappoint everyone is 100% not necessary. Even if your position is that you're going off of past subjective experiences not pleasing you - Its. Still. Just. Your. Opinion.

First of all, criticism is needed for things to improve and it shouldn't be taken as a toxic behavior from the playerbase. The hype would be there still for more players if ANet didn't decide that in this expansion they would take things you had and have you work for them again. Instead of making people happy that it's coming, people are upset about it, and honestly, I think it is right that people complain. I don't remember people being upset on HoT and PoF releases.. People started to be upset with an expansion release on EoD, because it was being developed while IBS was coming and we all know how the quality overall went down.

Why I'm not happy? Hmm let's see:

    1. New expansion old assets:

When they advertise a new expansion people expect more new assets than old ones.. It should be something we are excited to see because it's new, but instead, we are getting a lot of old assets being reutilized over and over like we saw on EoD and now on SoTO. It really shows some half-assed work there. I'm really not excited to see a burning version of the Wizard's Fief that was copied in the sky. Idk, maybe they could have made the tower be a fake cover to a portal that lead people to somewhere new?

When I saw this post from that_shaman I had to laugh because it just really represents how it feels the new expansion:

    2. New gear screwing up old gear:

I and a lot of people worked hard to craft legendary gear and runes so we'd never have to bother with it again anymore when the meta changes. Now, not only they will remove part of the legendary runes, they will also put it somewhere else (relics). If it wasn't enough of a hassle, people will have to work hard AGAIN for a legendary item in the future, just to have their QoL back. Which wouldn't be so much of a hassle if people could work on it right away as the expansion releases but the legendary relic isn't coming this year, but sometime in 2024.. (from january to december.. who knows when). Meanwhile, people will have to spend more, to craft temporary exotic relics for every build for every character. That is hassle that I, and a lot of players decided that we didn't want to have when we spent so much time, effort and gold making legendary gear. I do feel that part of my QoL is being taken away with this change. They could have added relics without messing with runes.. Either changing part of the 6th runes effect (like they did previously over the years) or just adding the new effects on relics only. I'm sure people would gladly accept the new feature if it was like that, because then it would be something no one had before and that they now have to work for it if they want it, instead of being something we had before and we will have to work for it again if we want it back.

    3. New system screwing up with old system:

Just like #2, we had daily login rewards that were ok for what you earned, being taken to the new system that now will make you do tasks to get what you used to get before. Why can't they both exist? Why take it with one hand and give it back with the other hand? It's a pretty f*ked up decision in my opinion. Before anyone says anything, no, I'm not one of those that abused the system with hundreds of accounts. People complained that people benefited a lot because they abused the system.. but that is not what happened for the majority of the players, most people have 1 account.

Daily login rewards were something that made people that weren't able to play for too long to come to the game every day because they would still get something for showing up even if it was for a short time. For the people that have a very limited time to play, it will surely be missed, because now they will earn very little of the Astral Acclaim (the Wizard's Vault currency) for logging in, and I'm pretty sure it won't be enough to get the same amount of mystic coins, laurels, clovers, tomes of knowledge and the account bonuses. These people will be hurt the most in my opinion, because of a few abusers.

    4. The right idea behind a bad decision:

I understand they want people to actually play the game but let's face it, GW2 isn't a game that people play religiously and part of it is the QoL of no gear grind with every expansion like on other MMORPG's out there. GW always had a concept of  a game that people wouldn't feel forced to play if they didn't feel like to just because of X or Y is happening at the moment. You could always quit for a while and come back at the same point where you left. The Wizard's Vault is said to be thought as a way to direct people to do things and get Astral Acclaim as a reward.. but wouldn't that mean that they will only play X or Y now because of the reward so they could get the mystic coins, laurels etc.? Because if it wasn't these being taken away from the player, they wouldn't play said contents.. either because it's not fun to play, it has bad rewards on it's own or because it requires more time than they can actually spend on the game (like Raids and long-kitten metas such as Triple Trouble or Dragon's End). Instead of fixing that, they put a carrot on a stick to "guide" players and make them play other parts of the game that no one plays anymore. Why not make players play X or Y because it's fun ? Why not fix the reason why people aren't playing X or Y content?

I remember that on GW2 betas weekends events (waaaay back in 2012), everything you did on the game had a small survey at the end asking if it was fun/rewarding. What happened to that concept? When did ANet started to think that taking away things from the player and put it in some other content would actually make them do it and that players would think that now it is fun?

Criticism is great and needed, but reactive negative statements arent criticism - and reactive negative statements are toxic. The simple fact is here, while there have been some blogs from ANet giving us more information about aspects of the expac, none of us - new or old, know how this is all going to play out with any absolute certainty to have the opinion that we're working all over again to gain things that have been taken from us. The point is, we havent played the expac, yet there is so much conjecture about what it is and isnt being presented as absolute. Instead of being patient, some players are taking to the forums with worry, panic, and overreaction, and this isnt healthy for the community.

It seemed like less people were upset about PoF and HoT because it was socially a different time then - 6 to 8 years ago respectively. Over the years, I'm sure we all can attest to how the landscape of commentary from players on forums has definitely changed...and it hasnt become better. PoF and HoT were great additions, and by comparison EoD may seem a little behind, but personally, I enjoyed both EoD and IBS. I honestly think IBS is one of the better overall storylines in the game, and I thought that, while EoD is a little bland creatively in comparison to the other expacs, it did add to the game and is fun to play. The point here is - an opinion, even one shared collectively by a group, is still just an opinion and doesnt represent the entirely of the community.

    1. Assets are 100% reused all over the game but NOW, now there is a huge outcry about it. I wonder if anyone has played Guild Wars 1 (?). To me, this is just cherry-picking todays what-not-to-like.

    2. I see your points, they are valid and understood, but unless this complaint comes with an absolute answer about how players with legendary runes will be compensated - or not, for these changes, I just feel like you're overreacting.

    3. I have so little time to play that many days, I cant even login so, how does this affect players like me? Also, you assume that the daily acclaim wont be enough purchasing power to compensate for the changes, but in reality you have no clue how much anything purchased with acclaim will cost.

    4. What data do you possess that allows you to have the opinion that GW2 players dont play GW2 exclusively? While I have very little time to game, I do have a variety of games I like to play, but I estimate that I probably spend 90% of my game time on GW2. The rest of this number is conjecture and opinion.

I remember beta weekends, and I agree that the survey feature is "probably" a missed component, but ANet hasnt taken anything away from me, and while some content is frustrating and difficult, I mostly have fun playing GW2, more so than most any other game I play anyway.

I think your post really just speaks to the people the OP is calling out because while your post is presented as constructive, it is mostly based on conjecture and being reactive to things you havent even experienced yet, and again, thats not criticism.

  3. The first few paragraphs of your post isn't very concise and it is kind of difficult to understand where you're coming from. However, I think a lot of the ideas you have in the second part are great.

My wife just started playing this game a month ago. We got her the complete edition plus Soto. She started as a Ranger and has been very open to exploring all facets of the game. The only complaint she has had about gear, is that most of what you find is useless, and she became overwhelmed about what she should do with the excess. When I told her to salvage it, she questions if she will need any of it later. As a relatively experienced player (1400 hours) I thought it was best to leave her to her own devices and really only play the game with her rather than teach her about the game - I would only give advice and recommendations if asked, and even then just more so point her in a direction. Since she started she has managed to save up 200g and is just now wondering about gear as a level 80 Soulbeast at the end of PoF - who has managed just fine. She isn't an experienced gamer either, but she does like gaming. That said, you know what she did to stay geared up...crafting. Can you believe that? She crafted her way to level 500 with zero guidance - not even wiki, and she used that to stay decently equipped up until now. I remember when we got on the subject of earning gold and she says she has 200g and asks if that's a lot, and I told that it is a lot for her, but honestly, that's a lot for most of us.

So, I think that while some of the systems are out of date, that they are still functionally usefull if players slow down a little bit and pay attention to the details. We forget what fun is sometimes because we're so concerned about being caught up with everyone else. My wife doesn't care about any of that, and by using the systems in the game for what they are worth, she accumulated a decent amount of wealth that seems out of touch for many players.

Also, there is a big update 12 days away that is changing some things you complained about, so we need to see how that plays out. But again, I like your suggestions.

  4. I agree with you OP - I don't want a "get out of jail free" card either. I was just having this conversation with my wife last night that I don't like it when things are push-button easy. That said, we have no clue how this even works, and it does sound really cool.

I mean, theres a reason why we can't use mounts in jumping puzzles and there should be a reason why this is limited in a way that doesn't completely trivialize combat.

  5. I believe if this is the information you're using to formulate your opinions of this game - whether it's good or bad - then why are you playing?

The fact this is posted here for any of us to care about just shows that some players don't care about playing a game that THEY like, they care about playing games that everyone likes. Players are in this post invoking political hate terms out of context as a reason for decline - is this really necessary....

ANet announced wvw aliances in 2018 and then almost immediately put the project on indefinate hold without any form of notice to those players who continued to spend money on the game thinking that their favorite game mode was getting some much needed development.

So, do I think that any promise or reference to future development is to be taken with a grain (or pound) of salt.

Oh, and back in June ANet announced that we would get an update about the next wvw world structuring beta event in, "a week or so." Not a word since. This wasnt supposed to be an event, just an update.

I must've forgotten that was a part of a major release that came with a dollar amount attached to it.

$25 is nothing if the entire thing dropped at once upon initial release. $25 for Anet "promises" for features that may - or may not - actually come to fruition on a haphazard schedule that has obviously not been hammered out as yet? It's not an unreasonable ask, it's just B.S.

I'm not sure what this really argues though. The fact is, some players pay 25 bucks just for a skin in GW2. Period.

And you're making some pretty sketchy assumptions - "features that may or may not actually come to fruition" - what's that even mean, man. You really expect ANet to back off from some of the major announcements they've made with Soto?

I dont know, dude. I would have paid 25 bucks just for the pve legendary armor alone.

So charge full price for an expansion, and drip-feed the content instead of giving us a full expansion.

    Ugh...

It all depends on what your idea of "full price" is. The base price is $25 bucks - which players spend often on exclusive mount skins. Personally, I don't think $25 bucks a year for a yearly stream of additional content is an unreasonable ask.

  9. Personally, I feel blessed to play. My wife and I really enjoy playing this game together. I wouldnt say we're too overly invested to not have our criticisms one way or another, but in that respect - we have enough knowledge to base our criticisms more importantly on our experience specifically - which by opinion isn't right or wrong. We love this game. Many people love this game, many people don't love this game. I highly doubt ANet is deliberately, or knowingly trying to disappoint or hurt anyone who doesnt love their game.

At the end of day game forums, recently, seem more a repository for customer service complaints than, what they used to be, a place to talk about a game in an informative way.

This person definitely has the authority to tell us why we should hate GW2 fishing. At one time I actually had no issues with GW2 fishing and made a lot of gold. Now that I've seen a post from someone who has so much MMO fishing experience and they hate GW2 fishing, I have been convinced that I should also hate it.

D3 Forums weren't that bad, and frankly such a tiny portion of the player base ever used the D3 forums that using that as a view into the entire community for that game is basically intellectual dishonesty.  Certainly, there has to be a better example?

  12. I believe the problem with this kind of post is that if the community has an imbalance toward becoming more toxic, the bias will shift and people will answer NO to this question because a toxic person in a mostly toxic community is right at home.

My wife just started playing this game about 2 months ago and she has become increasingly more frustrated with the extreme agenda based attitudes of players in the meta zones versus the more peaceful and helpful attitudes of players in the beginner zones.

Personally, as someone who has been gaming as a hobby since 1986 - I have been involved in the gaming community at large in one way or another, and the last 5 years or so have seemed to shift away from the gaming community being a more peaceful niche to being one of more outspoken entitlement. And once entitlement enters the room it starts making friends and becomes divisive.

If the community here has become noticeably more toxic to some players, it's not an isolated incident. I frequent many game forums and it doesnt really matter where you go. This behavior is common. I also believe that the idea of being a paying customer affording you the right to complain about your subjective experience and tell other paying customers who enjoy the game that they're wrong, and vice-versa is hogwash and BS blended up into a sour cocktail.

People have the right to complain, but they don't have to right to make their opinions absolute, and people have the right to enjoy the things people complain about, but they also do not have the right to make their opinions absolute. In the end nobody has the right to shift something one way or the other just because their subjective expectations aren't being met. Developers make games for us but they don't make games SPECIFICALLY for us. Developers make games based on a creative and artistic idea to gain the most popularity possible to gain the most money possible. So when person-specific isn't satisfied - it's nothing personal...there are plenty of other games so, go in that direction and don't make it worse for players who do enjoy what you don't enjoy.

Unfortunately, it's never that simple. And wanting to play something that isn't how you want it to be and complaining about it until you force it to be how you want it to be, versus leaving to go play something else that is already how you want it to be - just seems to come across as complete nonsense these days.
