usernameisapain.7163
I have recently returned to the MMORPG genre after a several years Hiatus, prior to that I was quite keenly involved in all sorts of MMO & MMORPG's. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy following the stories provided by the developers, and kill X to solve quest can be fun. PvP, in GW2 setting, both unranked and WvW I find fun. Yet I always found myself returning to singleplayer RPG's and story-driven games with other activites. GW2 story compared to GW I found overall weak, or perhaps more, it never drew me in or got me as invested. Admittedly I might be in the minority who enjoyed the personal story of GW2, more than the collective main story that followed. I think A-net overall missed a golden opportunity by not making the home-instance more interactive, adding small dynamic events there. Anyhow, I am getting to the point finally. I have often thought about getting invested in RP in the GW/GW2 scene, since the lore is fun and different. So a couple of questions to hopefully start me off. 1 - Do most of the RP's follow game lore? Or will there be immersion breaks when involved in RP guilds/events from the RP's themselves? 2 - Having read the forums a bit, it seems to me that the RP guilds are sort of like separate islands? or do they interact in any way? 3 - What is a good way to get started? as this is new to me, should I contact a guild first? or create a character sheet? any good advice for complete beginners in this type of sub-culture.
Batel.9206
Hi! Welcome to GW2's RP community! I'm a bit of an RP newbie myself, at least in this game, but I'll do my best to answer your questions. (Warning: ...I tend to ramble. Sorry. I've put my long ramble-y response in spoilers to save space. Now here's hoping I didn't mess up on the formatting with these forums...) Quote 1 - Do most of the RP's follow game lore? Or will there be immersion breaks when involved in RP guilds/events from the RP's themselves? Spoiler It really depends on what sort of RP you're looking for. I'd say that, for the most part, the serious RP does follow game lore. (There's a lot of guilds and events that specifically follow the Living World story, for example. The figure of the Pact Commander is usually kept very vague, but the general events are taken as canon.) Many guilds make up their own plots, but they do tend to be kept solidly within the realm of possibility in Tyria. If you wander down into the taverns of the world, like in Divinity's Reach...eh...it's kind of hit or miss. Venture there at your peril. 😜 I'm not knocking all tavern RP, mind you - it's just that it has a reputation (deserved or not) for being a bit...iffy. [pirate voice] Thar be danger! [ahem] Thar be edgy mercenaries who never seem to do any mercenary-ing, flirty flirts looking to flirt (cough), nobles who are apparently refugees from a soap opera, charr centurions relaxing in Divinity's Reach for some inexplicable reason, and more lore-breaking Mary Sues than you can shake a dead Elder Dragon at. Thar be also genuinely good, solid RP'ers who venture into taverns because it's in-character to do so. You never really know who you'll run into. Quote 2 - Having read the forums a bit, it seems to me that the RP guilds are sort of like separate islands? or do they interact in any way? Spoiler Again, it depends on the specific guild. I know of two who collaborate for a monthly event. I'm sure there are others. For the most part, however, it does seem as though each guild has their own specific atmosphere, plot, leadership, etc., without much input or interaction from others. Quote 3 - What is a good way to get started? as this is new to me, should I contact a guild first? or create a character sheet? any good advice for complete beginners in this type of sub-culture. Spoiler You could browse around this website for a bit and introduce yourself here: https://www.guildwars2roleplayers.com/ Many guilds and players use this as a way to advertise events and characters. It's not required, of course, but it can be helpful. What I did was make a character and just walk up to an open event I saw on the GW2RP site. I didn't know anyone there and wasn't in a guild, but that didn't matter. I had an in-character reason to be there should anyone ask (my character had a small vacation from work and decided to visit her aunt in Claypool, and while there she heard about an upcoming murder mystery play a local guild was doing, so she decided to go to it). It worked perfectly...and gave me some much-needed confidence about doing that sort of thing in the future. You could try that, if you'd like: find an intriguing event to go to, make up an in-character reason to go, and do it. Have fun. Make friends - or enemies. Interact with people. Add interesting RP'ers to your friends list so you can ask them questions/contact them again later. Anyway, what sort of RP are you looking for? That may determine if a guild or going solo is more along your style (though it should be noted that a lot of RP is to be found solely in guilds...but by no means is it exclusive to guilds; you just may have a harder time finding it solo). For example, do you have a charr soldier? There are many warband guilds. Do you have a wandering sylvari mender? You could RP-walk around the world and emote at people and objects, and see who responds. Do you have a human bandit? There are several 'criminal' guilds who deal with the shady side of society. I'd encourage you to think of a general idea behind a character first, though - you don't need to find and commit to a guild right now. (Heck, even committing to a guild is not a permanent, once-and-for-all decision. You have every right to leave if and when you feel like it, for whatever reason. You should never be forced to stay in a guild that doesn't suit your interest or respects your boundaries. Always keep that in mind.) That said, there's a guild, TCRP (Tarnished Coast Roleplayers), whose purpose is to connect people wanting to RP. They also help new players with whatever questions they may have about RP or the game in general. It may be helpful to you! usernameisapain.7163
Excellent answer pal! That sounds like a good way to get involved, and murder mystery is always fun, on paper of course 😅 I know for sure that I want something non-lore breaking, since I'll be seeing GW2 lore everywhere I go, it'll make it a bit immersion breaking for me. With that being said, I am not sure what type of RP in specific I am looking for, in general something that just makes the world feel more interactive, although I am not a huge fan of ESO, the event system and NPC's are generally a lot of fun, and gets me invested in the world, even if the reward is a non-starter for me. I will look at the links you provided thank you. I was hoping that different guilds would be interconnected in the same RP-space, but that is perhaps being too greedy! for now I'll find a pond to dip my toes, and then we'll see how it goes after that, and whether this is for me or not long-term.
JayHog.3280
Wonder if crossovers are an interesting thing to roleplay. I've been making Asura out of yordles from League of Legends. Because given League cannon, and the existence of the infinity ball, there can be a reasoning to my favorite League species to show up in GW2 as their own separate entity due to metaverses and all of that. Heck, I've even been streaming the expansions with a friend, causing drama to play along as I beat the story line of said expansions, did Teemo in HoT and Poppy in PoF. Have plans for IB and EoD and maybe more if Anet holds true to more coming out later. I just want to know if it's common or even liked around these parts, I'm not that great on creativity, so these concepts is what allows me to have some fun pretending to be something else. Shame you can't just be a random asura farmer without being forced to tie yourself to a class that feels off.
Batel.9206
RP questions? Someone has an RP question?? Yeehaw! Rambling wall o' text incoming! 🤪 ...ahem. Well, as far as crossovers go - honestly, there's no rule that says you can't, but the fact remains that many RP'ers tend to turn away from those concepts and characters. It would be difficult to find RP with a crossover character. When you roleplay, you're presenting your character's backstory/concept and asking the people you're RP'ing with to accept it in-character. A lot of people just want to RP within the confines of Tyria, not accept concepts and things from outside the game entirely, no matter how well thought out or well-played they are. You can absolutely have a crossover, but be prepared that some people may not want to RP with you. You do hit on an interesting point, though: the existence of multiple versions of Tyria, as proven by the Mist War. (Sort of...lore's a bit sketchy there, but it's a start.) Instead of a purely crossover character, you could, perhaps, RP a character from one of those alternate realities. Maybe they were a soldier in the Mist War, got separated from (or deserted) their side, and accidentally stumbled into the enemy's portal to their world. Maybe an asuran experiment in an alternate reality went very wrong - or very right - and teleported someone to this version of Tyria. Perhaps this character would be confused, wondering why everything in this world seems so familiar but different; or perhaps they know full-well what happened, and they're trying to get back to their world, or tentatively enjoy life in this new reality, or avoid detection because they aren't sure how others will respond to their situation, etc. It might still be something of a hurdle for other RP'ers to get over, but I've seen more outlandish concepts that seem to be accepted (everything from GW1 characters stuck in the Mists and hurled forwards through time, to elemental spirits in human form, to Mist demons that aren't quite sure how to do this whole 'people' thing). As for being just a random asura farmer...sure you can. 🙂 It just takes a bit of imagination. A random citizen of the world could be any of the classes with some explanation as to why the things they do in-game aren't what they do in-RP. For some characters, it's as simple as "they are [class] because it allows them to wear [heavy/light/medium] armor and/or wield [weapon]." For example, I have a character who's a Ranger, simply because I wanted him to have a pet fern hound. Class in RP matters only as much as you want it to.

Fenrir.7409
Looking for a way to run combat RP that doesn't use the commander map markers as I don't really want to run around with the commander tag on when RP'ing, as that seems like inviting problems. In FF14/WoW I'd use the free map markers, but since those are locked behind the commander tag, what do people usually use?

I didn't rp in the last years, so I don't know what is usually done in your case, but - if you didn't get to know already - you can set your squad to private, so your tag can't be seen outside of your squad and won't attract others on the map. Using a squad is the only way I know of to get something like markers.
Toogee.7534
Out of curiosity, how is a RP typically played out here? Is it played out live and character speech posted in the chat window (or something like Discord)? Or would a group play through an event and then RP the actions that occurred at a later date on a forum/Discord?

Or would a group play through an event and then RP the actions that occurred at a later date on a forum/Discord? Generally, yes, it is played out live, through a mixture of /say and /e (or /me) channels in chat. /say is usually for dialogue, while /e is usually for character actions or more descriptive dialogue. For example, my character is Bai Jiahao, and as I walk up to a few friends, I type: /e sees people he knows and smiles in relief, making his way toward Elena and Gethin. "Hey, there you are," he says, calling over the din of the crowd. "How's it going?" In chat, this would append the message to my character's name, so it would read Bai Jiahao sees people he knows and smiles in relief [...] If I didn't want to describe Jiahao's actions, I'd just type dialogue in /say, which would read in chat as: Bai Jiahao: "Hey, there you are. How's it going?" /say and /e text are different colors. /say has your character's name in light green and the text in white, while /e is uniformly dark grey. As far as events go...it can lead to some pretty amusing situations. I was attending a race the other day when a Legendary Bloodstone Crazed Moa happened to pop up nearby. That wasn't planned, but we rolled with it. Everyone went "Hey, do you smell bloodstone?" "MOA!" "What the heck is that!?" in /say chat, playing it in-character, as we all raced off to murder the beast before it murdered us (it'd definitely put a crimp in our race if a giant glowing monster bird killed half the racers before they got started). Then we joked about it afterwards. "Who gave bloodstone to a moa?" "No one sane." The race event itself was with actual mounts. We didn't just type in /say and /e what we were doing - we got on rollerbeetles, launched ourselves off the waterfall in Kessex Hills, and sped around a racetrack that had been set up (with the use of squad markers to denote the checkpoints we had to go through) by another player. People who weren't racing at the moment stayed at the starting line and cheered us on or talked amongst themselves. Some groups can use Discord, if they aren't able to make it in-game, or if there's an event that requires more in-depth involvement than what the game can offer (since chat has a fairly restrictive character limit), or if they want to avoid trolls (as sometimes will happen in-game), or just for fun. I know one guild who uses Discord's /roll function for rolling dice to determine the outcome of the event, and they're definitely not alone in doing so. A bit of randomness can be fun, after all. Overall, it depends on who exactly you're RP'ing with and what you want to do. 1
